All Treasure Hunting
The other day I was out detecting a local ballfield/park I figured it would be a good place because its kind of secluded and basicly not used in the winter months, I was ther for about a half hour and an older gentleman came up to me and asked me how I was doing and if I found anything, I told him no not yet and we proceeded to talk for a good 20 mins about how he was a coin collector,His service at the park and just life in general, He wished me luck and was on his way, Shortly after a car with blacked out windows pulled in the parking lot and parked off in the corner I continued to swing my detector enjoying the day, About 15 mins later the car backs up and a kid probably 18-26? Started yelling out the window at me "Hey look its a penny" and started throwing change out the window..I shrugged it off as some moron and figured it was over, well he came back and parked up on the street and was yellling down at me for a few minutes until I decided I better get out of there because I didnt know what he was capable of, So I walked slowly to my car and packed everything up in my trunk and sat in the car with the heat on to warm up hoping he would leave because there was only one way out of the park and he was pretty close to it and I was affraid he was going to block it..He left shortly after I got in my car so I go out of there and made sure nobody was following me....Never would I thought that I would get harassed while enjoying a "new" Hobby ( I have only been detecting a little over a month) Have any of you guys had similar experiences?? Is there anyone out there in the state of Connecticut? If so have you had anything like this happen to you?

There are idiots everywhere my friend. You just can't help but run into them. You did the right thing in not taking the "bait" and confronting him. He was probably just looking to annoy someone and was hoping you'd fall for it. Good job maintaining your composure and not engaging with him. Stupid punks with nothing better to do.......

A few times, just brush it off and go somewhere else!!! Its better If your Hunting With someone else But At times You still Get that Feeling And Pack up A Move to Better Hunting areas For Awhile HH Chug and Red

Doucheyness knows no bounds. Seems like everyone <30yrs acts like that these days!

Two words: Conceal Carry!

Fella, You hit the nail on the head, I just turned 40 last week and I have noticed that these kids are much different then people I grew up with, I mean I remember seeing people detecting and thought it was cool and I would stop and talk to them but today everyones a tough guy, Part of the reason I bought a detector was to get away from a-holes..hahaa

If you metal detect long enough, you'll come across just about every type of person there is....including cops. Unless you know your area REAL well, I recommend that you hunt with a buddy or two. Can't be too careful these days.

If I feel I need a weapon, I don't conceal it, I make it as obvious as I can. I believe that's the best deterrent. If it's concealed I believe your chances are greater to have to draw and use it.

You can always raise your phone to your ear and bluff a call that your reporting them or actually make the call that some punks are yelling at you and throwing things at you. Or bring a rocket launcher with you and do the world a favor before they breed!

yeah ive had a few douche bags over here in the U.K.,,shouting *GEEK* seems to be there only word , i just turn my back on them and carry on enjoying my hobby or just go back to the car and move on, sounds like you did the right thing.

I was never harassed while Detecting so I can only say what I think I would have done.

I believe I would Have Looked their way And Nodded & Smiled Big then went back to detecting.
Once I was ready to Leave, I would have gone over to where they were & pick up the change they threw :laughing7:

Of course Like I said just conjecture.

Were you wearing headphones? It's a lot easier to ignore someone
if you are. Just pretend you can't hear him. Even the slowest thinking
person usually figures out pretty soon that "he can't hear me" and
leaves to find other moronic things to do.

It helps if the headphones are big and visible from a distance.

I had some kids yell crap at me I turned and said I have to do this to pay for ur parents to be on welfare. Never heard a word from them again.

I got razzed out at the beach once by some teens trying to impress their girlfriends. I let it go with a smile till one of the boys tried to grab my machine. I am a fairly big guy with a hard head, and I grabbed his hand and slid his elbow up next to his ear while telling him my machine was worth more than his car and he needed to move on down the beach.

Unfortunately, I scared the bajeezus out of the little girls in the process - and myself, as I thought about it when I got home. Had it escalated, I may have
gone to jail, and a 17-year-old kid could have been seriously hurt.

The bottom line is this, if you feel threatened take out your cell phone and call 911 immediately. Nothing good can come from a physical confrontation, and when the kids see you in the act of calling for help, they usually take off. I also made this shirt up for myself, and I am NEVER bothered by anyone when I wear it.. :laughing7:

I once had 3 teenage boys approach me and asked for money. I responded that I was there digging up pennies and you are asking ME for MONEY!!:icon_scratch:

They said they never thought of that and moved on. Stupid punks.

99% of the people leave you alone, or are just curious about what you are doing and what you are finding. If you encounter the 1%er, it's a big planet, move elsewhere. Enjoy this hobby. It has a lot to offer!

I had a kid sizing me up at a park one time. He came over and asked me for a cigarette but I told him I quit 10 years ago. Once he saw that I was slightly bigger than him and I was holding my Lesche digger I believe he changed his mind. I didn't take my eyes off of him until he finally left the park.

never had anyone harass me yet but one thing for sure I have two weapons in hand at all times a digger and a metal detector that swings high as well as low! hope it never comes to that I have had a lot of teenagers come up to me and ask questions and move on as well as parents bringing littleones up to see my finds and I usallay have a few coins that are not to dirty and let the little ones pic em out and just watch the smile come across thier faces Makes My Day and My Hunt!

Yay...I have actually had Bums do that to me, Throwing change in front of me, I actually ignored him and walked off, and he went on his way. The problem here in Texas is, the good places are in the damn ghetto. So we are always surrounded by low lifes, but for the most part, I really havent been harrassed. Also, I look intimidating most times, being the only white guy in the neighborhood holding my Lesche digger like im about to charge someone :)

Might try picking one up and get all excited and say "holy crap a (fill in the blank year/denomination)" and say "hey thanks these are worth about $50 in crap condition but this ones really nice. Thanks again!"
