Last hunt turned up nothing but clad...no worries, these things happen. So I'm at the flea market today and see a seated dime on a guy's table labeled "no date." It's priced under melt, so I reach in my jacket pocket where I find recently dug, uncleaned clad quarters. YUP. bought seated dime with DIRTY quarters.

No date coins IRK me for some reason...so I did the UNTHINKABLE...dipped a seated liberty in heavy duty acid!! Have I gotten that jaded in my old age?

Oh yeah, process worked too...I did get a date AND mint mark :-) 1877-CC. Common as seated coins go, but at least the coin no longer irks me as much.

Yes, it really does work just like in those dumb CSI shows. Nitric acid eats away the metal differentially revealing details because of differences in the metal structure created in the processing of pressing the design.

How 'bout you? Would you drop acid on a no date seated you bought with dug clad?

It's almost verging on rude when old silver is purchased with dirty dug clad. LOL But I like your style. Nope, I'd never use acid to determine the date and mint mark on an old coin. Just isn't that important to me, I guess. (Plus, I don't like playing with acid.) I might be jaded, but I'm not that date-fixated. (Just yanking your chain a little.)

GRRRRRR.

Always someone trying to bring you down.

You have to admit, I am getting better about spending the dirty clad...years ago there was a McDonalds across from my favorite honey hole. At the end of the day I'd walk over and lay down a mound of muddy, nasty coinage as payment for my supper. A free meal is only entertaining for a little while, though the expression on the face of the counter kid was always priceless...but obtaining silver dime with same nasty coinage is a more lasting use of dug coins.

id have done it. its so worn its not worth much to a collector anyway, and it would be worth more to me if i knew the date.

I like your style too. Dirty money for silver :) Don't like acid, it burns me :( I'm gonna get it on me if I walk by it :)
But you did get the Date!!! Good job

Hey Jim

Years ago i had bought some acid from Canada that was designed for the police to determine serial numbers on weapons that had been filed on. It worked on the stress of the metal revealing the serial numbers or in my case the dates. it worked really well on old buffalo nickels and standing liberty quarters... both coins as you know would lose a date very quickly once in circulation. I actually filled in some rare coin positions in my Whitman books because of that. But i do not know if this acid is still available and i have lost track of where i bought it.

Sounds like the nitric acid worked in a similar fashion

thanks for sharing that tidbit
