Have you ever found a marked silver halve?

I was looking through a Loomis box over the weekend and found what appeared to be a marked 1967 halve. It was pretty dirty and the edge was all black so I am guessing someone missed it.

I will post a picture later. The mark was with a Sharpie, it traced the face and made a big triangle nose like extension before returning and tracing the rest of the face.

my guess, it was marked at a time when 40% silver was just tossed back into the pile, which could have been as late as 2007. Remember, people didn't really pull 40%ers until several years ago.

Also, not all coins with markings on them are CRHer marks.

There are a couple of major categories of marks or defacement of coins.

Some coins (particularly quarters) are marked for use in jukeboxes. The owner of a restaurant or bar would give these marked quarters to employees to play music whenever it was slow and quiet. The owner would know how much of the quarters were his own money and what bar patrons had spent.

Some coins (all denominations) have been used for treasure or scavenger hunts. For example a metal detecting club might "seed" a park with colored coins, different colors gave different points and the points could be exchanged for prizes.

SBA dollars have been dyed by individuals a certain colour (generally purple) by people who wished to increase circulation of the coin and to prevent confusion with the quarter.

Some coins (particularly halves) have been gold plated, stamped, etc. and passed off as novelties and advertised on TV, newspapers and magazines. In general these coins are not worth more than their face value (unless they are silver)

Then you've got just generic marks that someone did when they were bored.

I have a red painted 64 I found this summer. the paint was well worn.

I have also found green 40%ers, but I think that is just oxidized copper...

One teller at a bank told me she and her family would cook mushrooms in a stew, and they knew the stew was ready when the silver half dollar they threw in turned green. I thought that was fascinating and then wondered how many of the green 40%ers I had were in mushroom stew...mmmm stew...

Two 40%ers, both out of the same box, spray painted with acrylic spray paint, lime-puke-green. Wonder where those came from.

FWIW I missed them on the edge check, caught them on the sound check.
