Whites Prism IV / Bullseye II pinpointer
Hi gang. It's ME again! <grin> I got to go detecting again today and I had a wonderful time. Quiet park, Gorgeous weather!!! moderate temperatures and low humidity. Only thing that I could gripe about was the still concretelike hardness of the ground just under the grass. It's just so dry!
For today's hunt I revisited a park in the next city over from my own, Richmond, just down the road a bit. I was directed to this park by a kindly Ky. State Parks Ranger two weeks ago today when he stopped me from detecting in a state park.... long story, but happy ending.. see previous post "Busted". Anyway, I'm back at this park, Waaaayyyy in the back (it's a VERY big Park!), and I'm pretty much by myself. Only a couple of cars come and go while I'm there, a couple of guys held some batting practice on one of the diamonds (baseball folks.. don't get excited). Being at ease and having no reason to be in a hurry I took my time and took it all in before starting to swing. I even had the camera with me this time so I took some snaps of the park.. or at least this end of the park... check them out..

I began today's hunt on that long strip of grass dividing the parking lot.. the "t-bone" if you will. The first time I visited this park I picked up a dollar just on the island end of the -T- . This time I worked my way from the T to the far end.. well to the halfway point anyway. I was itching to get on with detecting the grassy areas between the bleachers and the concession stand. I *DID* find almost a dollar on that strip though. Mostly pennies but one nickle (the only one today) and a couple of dimes... and pull tabs.
On to the fruited plains... and very dry hard soil! YIKES! Fortunately I didn't have to dig very deep or very often today.. most of what I found was either just under the surface or ON the surface.. maybe under the trampled grass, but not much digging involved either way. Lots of pennies again today.. and Dimes!!??!!?? Oh I'm not complaining.. they clean up and spend very well! <grin> Wasn't finding many quarters today though, but you can't have everything. I found some other odds and ends too. A token for "Iron Mike" Batting machines.. NO CASH VALUE of course.. and part of a flag halyard (clawlike hook device that "pinch locks" into the grommet on a flag) and this thing that looks like a cartoon thought bubble.. or some sort of stylized insignia ??? maybe you can help me out with identifying it?

And last but not least.. the find of the day.. the one that made me sit back on my heels and whistle dixie! (neat trick when you can't whistle to save your life!).. How did that line in the movie go?.. "You *DO* know how to whistle don't you darling?... You just put your lips together and blow.." <laughing> WELL BLOW I DID! I know it's nothing out of the ordinary for this jaded lot, some of you old pros have more silver than all the coins I've found combined! But this was my FIRST Silver! Ok Ok.. so it's not that old, and it's not that spectacular, but I'll take it and to me it's a keeper! I might even FRAME it.. <laughing> well.... maybe not that extreme. Anyway, I got a target BEEP for a penny or quarter (kept bouncing back and forth) about 2 inches down.. now from experience with my machine I figured odds were that it's a dime, and it's probably closer to the surface than 2 inches. Well I was right about the coin being a dime, but it was indeed about 2 inches down. Looking down in the bottom of the hole from where I'd just removed my plug of sod, as I reached for my bullseye..I saw a glint. You others know what I'm talking about.. that white shiny happy glint of untarnished metal against the earthy backdrop of soil. I felt that little skip of the heartbeat.. that slight intake of a gasping breath..before I caught it. I was NOT going to need my bulls eye for this find! There she sat..er.. HE sat. at the bottom of the hole just staring off into the dirt somewhere.. patiently waiting for me to fetch him from his premature internment. And Fetch I did.. My First Silver is a 1964 Roosevelt, and I LIKE it!

There are two letters or something stamped on the coin near the date.. Just to the right of the lowest point of Roosevelt's neck. The picture really didn't come out that well, so it doesn't show up, and I can't make it out clearly even with a magnifying glass. Anyone know what this is?
Pocketing my treasure I got a call from my darling wife. She was at the grocery store wondering if I was going to come home today or what? <laughing> I told her about my find and that I was calling it a day. I packed up my gear and headed home, and ran into a rainstorm on my way... <smiling> Yeah, the gods are smiling on me today.. great hunt, great finds, and now wetting down the ground to make ready for another adventure!.. and we REALLY needed the rain anyway.

Till next time! Happy Hunting all!

Congrats on your 1st wilver, bud! I still remember my 1st: an 1892 Barber dime.

Frodov,
Congratulations on your first silver!!! Great post & pictures.
Thanks,

Congrats, Frodov, on your first silver. You will never forget it. Great recap of your day also!!

The "JS" enscribed on the collar of Roosevelt is the initials of the cheif engraver of the dime design, John R. Sinnock.

I know exactly what you are talking about I found a 1957 silver dime two weeks ago and I came home last night from vacation and looked at it again. It may not be much for the pros out there but silver is silver. Congrats!

You gotta love it when you see the glint of silver in a plug! Nice Find bro!

Congrats on your first silver...mine was a Mercury Dime. It always gets the blood flowing.

Congrats on your first silver. May it be the first of many. My first was also a Roosie (1946) some 30 years ago. HH

I know how it feels to find first silver, now the future one come a little easier. The marks to the left of the date are the Artist initials.
