Now that is a definite brain scratcher. I am no engine guy but it looks like a breather/filter for something but just smashed. I hope someone can identify for you

It reminds me of cooling fin like on a radiator, the ripples and pin holes.Or possibly some type of diffuser for a kerosene lantern or oil lamp/gas.:dontknow:

It does look like part of an early fuel filter I've seen before. Tony

If you click on the image twice and then again after the image opens in a new tab to enlarge it further you can see a very intricate designs/patterns on the clip and on the outside of the brass ruffled piece that appear to be perforations but it's not perforated, it's a design/pattern, I say it from something decorative, not sure what it is, but a filter wouldn't have such intricate designs incorporated into the filter.IMHO
