Hmm, could be, but what's that extra C or G at the end? Also, if it helps, the onyx has a round nut with a flathead screw in it on the back.

Some rings will be stamped HGEP too. So what you think is a C, might be a P. Could you post a close-up of the mark?

I'd guess the screw is to hold the initial in place, also would facilitate the ability to put different initials on the stone.

Turn the ring over, it might actually be an "L" in fancy font. Just a thought.

Thanks for point that out to us, I missed that. After you pointed that out I called a coworker over to take a look. Without me saying anything to him he said that it looked like an L too. And when I asked him could it be a P, he said, “why would make a backwards P”. And that it doesn’t look too much like a 9 either.
