It may of been a "dug" coin by one of those metal detector guys.

Its typical of dug coins. Nickels are the pits and quarters not too good either!
Just absorbed color from ground.
 

That's why I bought a tumbler, at least gets them to "spendable".
 

Materials such as what the “nickel” is made of discolors and corrodes when exposed to moisture, fertilizer, etc. ALL of my dug nickels around here are toasted to one degree or another. That’s why I’m not much of a nickel hunter....low face value for modern ones and anything old and potentially valuable is junk out of the ground.
