Found this near a Civil War area in WV. If you have any ideas of what it is I would love to hear them. I thought it was an egg holder for the upper class. RSCN1808.webpDSCN1804.webp

Sounds reasonable, sure wouldn't hold a shot of bourbon.

An egg holder certainly makes sense. Great find!

looks like an incense burner with lid gone missing. Pretty old looking though.

I too think it's an incense burner.

Maybe it's dual-purpose. :laughing7:

I think that it's an antique, mid 1800's incense burner that was probably used in a church at one time. At least, that's what it was designed for...

Those marks on it look like marks on the brass stuff from India.

I think you nailed it DC, the exact shape is of no consequence.

Imagine the odors of a civil war encampment, especially with hospital tents. I would have offered some comfort to burn incense in the stench. Sub 8-)

Don't think it has anything to do with the civil war. Remember, people have been tramping around losing things in the 150yrs since then.

It looks similar to the ones they use at mass

Sometimes I think they expect an answer within 10 minutes of posting. ...Or maybe they just take the first guess that pops up.
