Found in Claiborne Tn. Last week, very near Kentucky state line. this was out of context with rocks in the area, look like maybe a small tomahawk or war club, distinct hafting area,it is 3.35 inches long,0.88 thick at end below haffting area, and about the same above there, has rudimentary work along edges and some long straight work. Pics I hope are clear enough...thanks rls2040

Rock, this is the only thing I found in Tennesee, looks and feels like a small ax,has hafting groove and has a few long thin flashes removed,so far the comments have bee ,it is a natural shaped rock,I am stil not convinced, what do you think. rls2040

The evidence on this stone being altered by man is just not that clear from what I see here. Even if it was made by man, that material looks like it's not common or this was made expediently. I have seen stones in collections that had a thicker grooved area to haft. I see what you're talking about. I have collected expedient tools here in NC but in an area I've picked up more archaeological evidence. If you have found more stronger evidence in that area, I see why you collected this stone for speculation. It could very well be part of the archaeological context there and that's why you decided to pick it up. As for giving you a definite ID, I just see a natural, weathered rock. This evidence here that would normally stand out as being a man-made stone is just not that clear.

I agree rock, found this thing where extensive grading going on on a mountainside ,mostly thin layered rock.this one was out of context with all other rocks in that area, actually found it near the curb on a new street.Place was so jumbled up from grading I didn't find anything else. Thanks for your input..Carl(rls2040)
