Help with removing gems from matrix

I would appreciate it someone could tell me how to remove gems from matrix (smoky quartz) without damaging them. Thanks! Your all are SO helpful to a newbie!

The only way to remove the material with a minimum of damage is to cut it out. Due to the fracturing already present the specimens may crumble a bit anyway. Other than that careful chipping is the only other way to free up your gemmy material.

I agree! However, the Smoky Quartz if that is what it is, appears to have developed as part of the host rock and will probably completely fracture and crumble when cut out.

DD is right, sawing or chipping. I often use the chipping method for "cheaper" rough.

Shaman15771 stones may be more valuable like they are as a specimen. Good luck either way. Great looking material.
