OK OK, before you all ask! no I didnt find this in my yard. This is how some research paid off. Was checking through my old maps and found out where the old Watkins Glen fair grounds were located back in the 1800s, I really didnt have much faith for this spot, but gave it a shot anyway. So about 20mins into my hunt I pop this out of a 6 inch plug, this coin was black! either from tar, or from a fire. seems like it was tar, pitch or roof tar, who knows.
but this coin had little or no hope of being cleaned. braught it over to Mud(swat)s house on the way home to show him, so maybe he`ll chime in on how messed up it was. still needs a little more cleaning.
enjoy the pictures

well, heres how she turned out, Id rather not buff the detail off of her so this is where I stopped. I think most of the crud preserved he detail to what she is now. After the pictures I gave her a silver glaze buffing so she shines pretty nice. Compared to what she looked like when I found her, Id say its a night and day difference.
It was a free find, so im happy with it.
heres some pics
Enjoy!

Nice find that is awesome.

The seated half is still on my list of finds. Got alot of early barber halfs but no seateds. That was alot of money then. I could clean that thing perfectly. Looks to be in nice shape to.

A real beauty! I've found quite a few silver halves, and a handful of Seateds, but not a Seated half. That is a sweet find. I wouldn't be surprised if the Edsel token is even sweeter!

Re: Here`s some big (old) silver!!

Yeah, Ive found quite a few myself, 2 Barbers 3 Walkers, 1 Franlin 1 64 kennedy, and now the seated. hate to admit it but its my first 1800s silver. It is my 3rd silver half this year though. I pulled a walker and a very pristine 1903 Barber out of a park this spring. As far as finds go, this has to be my best year. The 2 civil war plates and all the LC`s ive pulled from my yard is going to be hard to top in the coming years. Thanks for the great replies from everyone, I just hope the finds keep coming.

It was dark black and you could hardly see anything, we tried Toothpaste, Tarn-x, and Lemon juice. With no results... ??? :icon_scratch: You cleaned it up nice. :o I would like to see final pictures and you have to take me to this site.... ;D

Keep @ it and HH!!

I hit the site last night again but only found some clad. Im headed to the library to do some more research on the area and maybe get a better fix on what area would be the best to hunt. Theres areas over there where you cant even get your digger down a quarter inch, the dirt is so rocky and packed so tight that its just awfull trying to dig up a 2inch signal, only one small area where this half was found could i dig. So its back to the library :icon_study:
thanks everyone, enjoy the before & after pics.
