in va beach, va, when it starts to lightening, they close all the beach and move everyone back to the boardwalk area. no one is allowed on the sand.

I think that is the same with all beaches and golf courses, to protect one from lightning strikes. I wouldn't be walking along the sand holding a lightning rod

Ok thanks didn't know what they do. Sometime when a storm comes in there is no lighten or thunder. Just heavy rain and wind.....Matt

Every year here in Florida someone gets killed by lightning!!! They clear the beaches for the protection of everyone. Even in the water if it hits close enough you are a toast. Tampa bay area is the lightning capital of the US!!! It gets ugly here real fast, we have had people killed sitting under an oak tree no cloud in sight, the lightning came from over 10 miles away!!! So when they say get out I'm gone, better to get out to hunt another day or later on in the day.

They do the same on Daytona Beach.....

I don't understand why, I mean your only out on wet sand or in the water holding 2 5 foot aluminum rods............. LOL

I've always been told, if you hear the thunder, be prepared. I remember a story some years back, where some kids were playing soccer (or something like that) under blue skies. Thunderstorm in the distances. Lightening struck. No one killed, but hurt I believe. It's been awhile. And stay away from windows for heavens sake. I know from experience...came right through our living room window and burnt the floor! Thank God we were in another part of the house at the time! All we heard was a very LOUD crackle! Scared the crap out of us!

Anyways, I heard that a man was struck by lightening here in VB just recently, on the beach!
