i was curous about the detecting holidays i see on line ?
are they anygood worth the trip, etc ?
also is it hard to gain permission to detect private land?
cause i saw a show on the TV about it being difficult to find things even for the archies
and they have large amounts of man power and equipment....

Hi baron,this would make for a great holiday and i saw a few BBC productions about archaeological digs there and these guys had everything and seem to spend a lot of time talking about the law and access to private properity and they didn,t find all that much.Gee if you laid out the cost of a holiday of this nature and when you got there you couldn,t m.d.I would be crushed.I don,t know how it all works there but sure would mind knowing.Can anyone fill us in.

A few years ago one could go over there and hunt real stuff with a group. But today I wonder? I mean, with all the attention and potential money to be made by land owners, etc., I just wonder about "seedings." You know, bury some low value UK dug oldies to keep the dumb Americans coming.

Maybe this isn't being done but knowing human nature and the way things are going I just have to wonder about all these hunting tours.

If I really wanted to, I could go on these myself but I much prefer my own reseach and hunting where and when I please. To me, the genuine-ness of the find is everything.

I took one of those tours about two years ago, had a blast and did make some nice old finds. It is expensive, around 700 British Pounds + transportation cost for 7 solid days, 8-10 hours a day of detecting. I stayed in a British home, ate home cooked meals and was submerged into British culture. When I went, there were only 5 people detecting but, he has expanded so you could have up to 12 people, the fields are huge so it isn't like you will be crowded. Other tours have 20-30 people on one field. This is the tour I took and would also recommend, the other tours will have you in a hotel, hotel food and tell you where and when to detect on a single field.

If you have the cash I would highly recommend it, the tour I took is also cheaper but that was not the reason I chose it, I wanted the culture that went with it. HH, Mike

Nice research Baron!!!

I didn't want to get to involved with my answer, just wanted to let you know the tour I did was a good one! There were only a hand full of great finds made during my tour by the 5 of us, no gold and no Celtic finds. This is a realistic tour, I chose the field I wanted to detect and there are soooo many and I believe the finds are not planted/seeded here as it is too vast of an area and the tour guide is always getting new land. It is Colchester, the oldest documented city in England. A few fields we detected hardly gave up anything, I went by myself one morning and beside some trash and common crap field finds like ammo casings, common underwear buttons, I found 2-3 1800 coins and the silver thimble. There was not a huge amount of finds during my tour. I also found two Roman coins, several 1800 coins, a 1600 silver coin made into a love token

, my avatar of a 1572 silver hammered Elizabeth 1st coin and several other nice keepers. I came home with literally a hand full of finds and that's it! But, very happy as I know it was a realistic hunt and I can compare the hunt with my hunts here on German fields, some days I find awesome relics and coins, some days I find nothing but trash and that's how it was on my tour! The other tours report astronomical and unrealistic amounts of finds, every tour! I get nothing by recommending this tour to you, only offering my experience and opinion. I would do it again however, I have almost the same hunting grounds here where I live in Germany, I just wanted to do England and it was great, LOL! If you are really interested then I'll try to answer some questions. HH and I hope you do get the chance to do a dream hunt like this, Mike
