Went out to scout some spots since my buddy jdsly and his girlfriend (buttonboy) Are coming to town this weekend and stopped by our original md'ing spot. This was our first site and we've dug a couple hundred flat buttons there but only one coin (my 1780 2 reale) and only one significant button, jdsly's rattlesnake button. We've pounded this site and didn't figure we'd spend any more time there. But as I pulled in I saw the farmer had plowed not only the field but also the road and on the other side all the way to the wood line. A quick 15 minute scan produced four flat buttons and to my surprise this copper coin! I think it's a Hibernia but not sure. Any help iding will be greatly appreciated. As hard as it was, I decided to leave and save this fresh ground until Saturday to hunt it with by buddies. Hopefully we will be able to post some more good finds then. Thanks for looking and HH!

Yes, it's a George III counterfeit Hibernia... old bust, so generally in the range of 1775-1783.

Great hunt. And that hibernia is in good condition for a field find.
It was very nice of you to wait for your friends!

Thanks George! I've found only a few coins so I was super excited when that one popped out! And my buddy jdsly would wait for me too if he was in my shoes... we've been treasure hunting together in one way or the other since we were 7 or 8 years old!

Way to go Darby, that's a great looking coin. Looks like that ground is still hiding a few surprises.

Thanks Jon! Yea that site always amazes me. Just when you think you've hunted it out it gives up some more treasure! Look forward to getting you up here one of these days. Good luck down there in the lowcountry.

It seems that as many as those turn up in the US as here - congrats.

Its good to see the original button spot give up a little more. Amazing what a good plowing can do[emoji4]

I'd say it only seems that way because diggers who hunt old in the U.S. are usually around the period that would have Hibernia coppers... and in addition to that it's a much better find on this side and worthy of posting... and of course many who detect in the UK it would be more in the way for what they actually want to find. In other words I think you are making the best analysis of limited info..

Way to go Darby! Excellent find and nice condition too. Best of luck to you!

Nice results for the sample hunt, good luck for Saturdays hunt with your buddy. Got to love a good soil turn, they just don't happen as often now with the no till, spray ways of today.

Thanks Cru, Casper, Carolina Tom and Pepperj. We'll see Saturday how good the plow did! Hopefully we will have some good finds to post! Thanks again for y'alls replies.
