This mill was in operation in the late 1800's into the early 1900's, they made wooden buckets, up until it burned down. We had hit the spot before, got skunked, we were on the wrong side of the brook and falls. So Dan and I decided to stop there befre we hit the corn fields, which we never made, got carried away at the mill. The only coin was a 1935 wheatie, but allot of interesting relics. A couple of whole bottles, allot of pottery shards, neat little ceramic button, a few what is it's.

The small tin looks like it opened at one time, I don't think there was anything in it. The copper? pipe has a wooden insert with a hole drilled through it hmmmm, no clue what it is (was). An old oil lamp that is in pretty good shape, a wood splitter, a stove door?, old lead pipe.

The 1940 license plate made my day until a friend showed up with a set for our 33 ford pick up. :-\ Kind of made mind look sad. :D He actually bought a whole set all the same license # from 1927 through 1940, there are a couple of years missing, but a great set. He gave us the 33 for our truck. SWEET!

Dan got a little excited about the penny (his oldest find yet) and ran to the brook to rinse it off so he coluld see the date.

We found an old well we detected around, allot of iron signals, we did not dig them all due to limited time and trying to get to the fields. We stopped for a bit and hit the old rock walls, I found me an old shovel I forgot to grab on the way out.

All in all it was a beautiful day and we got out!

Thanks for the advice Bootstrap, I'll work it and let you know how I make out!

CG,

Looks like a great day with some super finds. I like the license plates and that blue bottle is nice too. I never thought of going to the well to get water. Thanks for the advice, BootStrap.

Nice pics, CG. Thanks for taking us along with you.

Nice mill finds. That is the best looking lamp base I have ever seen unearthed. Is it silver???

Great bunch of digs!

Those old plates can be cleaned and repainted.

HH,

Badger

Re: Hit the Grist Mill today. UPDATE

Well you had me running to the garage to see if it was silver, dirt plated copper, but I cleaned her up for you. All the little dully flutchers still turn and go up and down. I can't believe it still works.

While out there I noticed this curious item, I think it's a button! Says E. MILLER & CO. DUPLEX. Always re-check your finds.

Thanks Badger, I think I'll paint her up and hang it in the garage.

Ooh, Kim, nice work! There's gotta be older stuff there, just need to figure out where, I guess this means that they started dumping there after the mill closed. I like the license plate - here's a collectors' site: http://www.alpca.org/
So no group hunt this weekend?
LL
P.S. That button's very cool, too!

Love the site pics!!! What a great spot! And I like the blue bottle too!!!

Thanks for sharing your adventure! Look forward to the next.

Congrats! Nana :)

Nana you can come along anytime! I'll make sure I take you ;).

Lara, I knew there had to be "stuff" there :-\. Where we parked we climbed down the rocks and then up the "wall" the other side is where we found the "dump", everything was on this side of the brook. Was a good exploration, with some neat finds, nothing to write home about, but I was happy with the day! :) We need the experience we had with the right location.....look out. I think we should try before winter to hit the Mill and the Field? Let me know when you have some time!

I looked up the "button", it's not a button :-\. But it dates the lamp :D. there was a piece still in the hole when we re-checked it, and this i what came out. It dates the lamp between 1845-1889. Edward MILLER & CO was out of Merridan CT., not that far away at all. Geat dating the site, it was near the well. Looks like we will be back there for sure. :)

I'm glad you saved it from the garbage. It looked silver in the first pic you posted. It is so complete that it is worth hanging in the garage ;D Good thing you saved it!

Great stuff- Especially the blue glass!

You probably know this, but if your truck is a 1933 model year you can register it with the '33 plates. That set looks really clean.

Awesome, CG!! I love to look at the old cellarhole pictures. I love the stonework. 8)

You found some neat stuff. Keep on hunting it! The coins will come! :)

Looks like a great place to hunt, nice finds.

Thanks we plan on having the plates issued to the truck. Funny thing is the green plate matches the green fenders and such on the truck, really will look great on the 'ol truck!

Thanks Mona & Fossis! I actually got that little tin to clean up and open, it is gold colored bttom, and white cover with some red lettering on it, just got it open a minute or two ago, there was some gooey stuff in there, like lip balm or flux. I did scoop it out and have it soaking some more, pretty greasy stuff for first thing in the morning. Can't wait to see if I can tell what it says. Any ideas, it's about the size of a quarter?

I'd still be curious to what the brass pipe with the wooden piece in it is? Besides what the boy's "JUNK", huh they say there junk isn't junk it's "STUFF" :D

Hey CG,I have a little container like the one you have with the greasy stuff in it,I can't find it now(just moved)or I would post a pic but I'm pretty sure it was lip balm, mine even has the brand name on the top.Does yours have any writing on it?It's funny those pics you posted bear a striking resemblance to an old community in No. Waterboro Me. called Things Mills, it is no longer in existence but the old grist mill site is very similar and the old dirt roads and stone walls all look so familiar in your pics that it almost gave me deja'vue.Look for breaks in the stone walls along the dirt roads.Sometimes they were just accesses to fields but many times if you look around enough you'll find foundations.Just beware of old wells as they are not always readily visible like the one in your pics and I'd hate to see anyone fall into one.Things Mills didn't produce a lot of coins(a few IHP's and a couple LC's)but I did come up with an 1861 New Hampshire state militia belt plate for my efforts and my buddy came up with a brass heart about 2-1/2 inches wide by 3/4 inches thick and according to his research those were given to horses that had been through battles as a medal of honor so to speak(don't know about the accuracy of this statement that's just what I was told) that's what excited me so about seeing the site you've found!Good luck on future outings to that site!! Bootstrap

Nice finds CG. I've been working around the house on the weekend getting ready for winter but I still want to make it your way one more time this fall yet.

How do Saturday or Sunday Oct 20/21 work for you?
