Honesty? or Creativity? when asked why so many halves.?

Hey guys, so I have noticed that most of the time when I go in asking for alot of halves, they ask why.... I have just made stuff up until now, but dumping, you get the same questions. I was wondering, how many of you CRH's tell your bank the real reason you are ordering x amount of boxes per week? For your dump banks, same question? How do you explain millions of halves every week or are you just honest with them. I am wondering if you are honest with your dump bank if that would just piss' em off, or if they are cool with it since they are a bank and that is just part of the job that comes with it... Thanks.

At first I was being inventive, but after awhile stopped trying. I've been honest about it with both supply bank and dump bank lately, and feel better personally. Haven't encountered any opposition either way yet; in fact, my dump bank actually told me they'd prefer if I dumped $500 at once, so they could ship them back to the main vault without having to wait to accumulate $500. Of course, I mostly dump rolled, so that may have something to do with it.

No reason to lie, nor tell them everything (that you are looking for silver mainly).

Best answer is that I am a coin collector and I like to build sets. This is true for me, but not the whole story. No reason to ever mention SILVER.

If a teller asks me about silver I would say that occasionally I find one (which nowadays is the truth for sure). I would not like if a teller asks too many questions since it is none of their business.

Just like a big pet peeve of mine is when I would be dumping halves and some busybody would feel that they have the right to get right next to the coin machine and look over my shoulder at what I was dumping. The couple of times that happened I would sort of give them a look (like get the hell away) and they would get the hint.

Take in a few of your unusual finds (no FG's, magician coins, a few NIFC) and explain to them what you are looking for. Most just shrugged but the magician coins were sparked the greatest interest. They were amazed at such a piece of junk. Now, they could care less and ask if I found anything unusual. I never mention the silver and they never inquired further.

My half dollar pick-up bank has been saving half dollars for me since I was a kid... gosh how many times that bank has changed names... Now wells fargo, most likely wont change names anymore.

Anyway, the tellers always saved the halves for me, so I order boxes from them now, I tell them I keep the nice shiny ones and the older ones, I am not lieing at all, I keep all NIFC's and all older ones(meaning 1970 and below... never gotten a 1970 yet though)

As to the dump bank- they have a free coin counting machine, the tellers there know that I am a coin collector(best be honest and not look suspicious at the dump bank)... They also supply me with brinks boxed pennies nickels dimes and quarters for no fee as long as they have enough for their business customers.

Went to pick up a box of pennies and nickels friday before memorial day, they could not supply me with coin because they were low as it is and the holiday weekend means demand for coin with area businesses. Went there yesterday, picked up a box of pennies and nickels, the tellers appologized to me about not being able to supply me boxes!!! Plus they let me pick out silver from the half dollar bag(only happened once, but they will in the future, havent seen a bag with silver in it since) Also, I get the coins off the magnet as well

I chat with one of the tellers there who saves me the foreign, he saves silver as well, but is not a CRH'er like I am. I occasionally tell him what I get and he knows I do not make profit off the bank because I keep all my finds. (I do not tell the full truth, but I do tell him some of what I get... if I get anything...

I tell them both that I collect coins and show them the foreign and odd coins. They do LOVE the magician coins.

One time my pickup bank teller pulls out a bank envelope full of standing liberty quarters that she found there and boutght.

My dump bank knows that I collect coins. Which is true. I collect silver coins lol.
One of the tellers there gave me a 1953 $20 bill once and another gave me a couple of star notes.

My dump bank is great. They love me. They always joke about how I bring bring in $200 in coins one day and $1500 the next. They always tell the new tellers that "You will get good at the coin deposits with Sean around. He's here every day.

My point is... Let your banks know that you save "old" coins and you never know when they will surprise you with some silver.

For me its more fun to straight faced lie. I have a great time telling them diffrent stories.
"I hide them in my wall for insulation and a rainy day fund"

"I pay all my bills with them so they always remember I paid that month"

" I like to set them up like dominos. Its much harder than you think"

"I give them to my grandchildren as gifts" ( I'm 28) ohhh the looks I get from that one lol

"Why are you the guy following me home every night?!"

"I play a leprican on halloween and its a prop". Best used in jan-march and I'm 6'1

"They are just so beautiful I can't stand to have them unappreciated in a bank where no one will love them"

That's just off the top of my head. My brother and me play a game with who can come up with the best answer while keeping a straight face.

It makes the hobby fun.

Funny thread. I usually tell them that my kids are coin collectors and like to go through them looking for old ones. It seems like tellers are a lot more enthusiastic about the odd request when it is supporting a child's hobby rather than a 30-something year old man's.

I usually use the same line when dumping, although I occasionally tell them I have a friend that owed me money and repaid me with the halves as a joke.

I had the most awkward moment a month ago when a teller asked me why I am only picking up dimes ( only $30 worth of CWR). I told them it was for my fiance's little business she has and that she ran out of dimes... The lady asked if I was an account holder there, and I said "No, I'm not." She asked me who I bank with, and I said "Chase." Well.... a Chase bank was literally across the parking lot (50 feet away) that I was using as a dump bank... she looked at me strange, probably wondering why I didn't just go to my bank..... i felt a little weird.

I was just asked this yesterday. Just said that I was a collector, then the teller showed me he was a collector also when he pulled 2 40% halves out of his pocket and said look these are real silver. I played it down and just mentioned how hard it is to find a 1987...

Why it's fun and interesting to make up a story.. in the end.. one has to be honest.

If the tellers get tired of you, they can make up a reason. It's happened before. They report you for stupid stuff like money laundering just to get rid of you. If you were deceptive with them, it gives them more ammo to report you with.

But in reality I dont think they care, the dump bank I use has tons of merchant coin bags everyday, so mine are just another small stack in the greater pile.

I've told so many lies that I don't even know where all the coin comes from now. For a long time I told everybody I cleaned out wishing wells or thas where the coin I was buying was going cause I gots BIG wishes. HH all, Mark

I don't ever use the world 'silver' unless I am point blank asked about it.

Even then, I tell them about a single Merc dime we found, and how awesome it was, and how we couldn't believe it. I know that sounds common place to most here, but I am pretty amazed that we found a Merc!!!!! The tellers drop it when they find out your big score was a $2.50 coin. I suspect it would be different if I told them we found 15 90%'s.

Nonetheless, honesty is the best policy.

Now I know what I'm saying next time I pick up halves: "It is so hard to find $20 gold pieces...."


As for the reasons, I tell them that I'm a collector and that my kids are also. It is the truth, so I don't have to keep thinking up new answers, and when you lie to them you are, in effect, calling them stupid. Most of these folks know what's up - they know that there are some valuable coins out in circulation and that this is what you're doing (unless you've got a business account that would need a lot of coin, like a vending company). Part of maintaining good relations with someone is being honest. Anyway, there's nothing wrong with it, and maybe a teller will actually start saving coins for you if they like you (for which they need a reason).
