hook on buckle thing ?

we found this, its about 3" long 2" high and has this hook attached to it .

the hook can be moved to any side the square is brass and the hook is iron.

It looks like a made up piece, but for what, I don't know.

Did you find anything else around it? It looks like it might be a crude carbine sling hook. the width of the buckle would be about right for something like that. Only a guess on this though.

it was found by the water were there are alot of waterman boats
