Horse & Rider 19th Century Lumberjack Camp Finds
I went out to re-work the same part of the lumber camp I hunted last week. Today I found:
(1) 40/60 rifle cartridge.
(1) old spoon
(1) brass buckle of some sort with rider on horse?
(1) Iron/Brass horse harness buckle
And several pieces of broken china
Other items too corroded to ID
Also shown here is that lock I dug last week after doing electrolysis.
Sorry I don't have any vintage 18th century lumberjack photos today because I'm changing scanners and the new machine isn't ready yet.
Story: I don't know how many times I've re-hunted this spot in the last 13 years but every time I do it I find something worth keeping. This must of been where the jacks dumped their trash or once had a camp house.
Some day I'll put all the finds from this spot into a case for viewing. I've lost track of how many padlocks; horse harness buckles; cartridges; bottles; potsherds; horseshoes; tools; etc., I've dug in an area not much bigger than 40x50 feet.
Today I was thinking I'd get totally skunked. I just hunted it last week but as you can see there was still something there.
Usually the finds here are very deep so one needs a deep machine. For example, the spoon, horse & rider buckle, and old 40/60 (ca. 1876) cartridge were easily 12 inches deep which is normal for this particular spot. In other areas in this giant camp the finds can be very shallow.
