Horse Track & Fair Grounds (Day 4 added)

rjnail Gave me a lead from back when he used to live
in Schuylkill County.

The site is now woods & owned by a Real Estate Company.
so this morning I headed out to their office to ask for permission.
had permission 60 seconds after walking in the office.

Next Stop was the Police station in town,
as the land borders water company Property,
Plus wanted to give them a heads-up in case someone
yells Terrorists Surrounding Them :P

Policeman said he could not give me permission
for water company land, for reasons, I just mentioned above.
"Paranoia" these days, But said IF I stray over the line
there would be no problem, as long as I stay away from
the Thing-a-Ma-Jiggs.
So he wrote up an Incident Report, & I gave him one of my
cards to tack fast to it, so any officers coming in later
would also know.
Before I left I advised him a Friend & I will be in there off & on
throughout the rest of the year, if the site starts Producing.
and he took me into his office & showed me an old
map of the Track & Fairgrounds. Very Cool officer.

Well for the first hour, I was wadeing through
Knee high Grass & ducking under over Grown
Park Shrubs, only digging Trash.
Lotta bullet Shells.

!!!!!!!!001.webp

Finally hit a spot with 2 Eyebrow pencils & a lip Stick

!!!001.webp

Found a Narrow road inside the woods
& decided to detect it & pulled out
a Penny 1981 which didn't impress me
so I decided to work my way out for the day.

Right before I hit the alley way I got what
sounded like a deep coin. but it wouldn't lock on &
the numbers read can tab area. but
because of it's obvious depth & because it was
between or under some large roots,
I couldn't pinpoint right, I decided to dig.
had to get down about 5" before my
probe could find it. From there I wen't down another
4 0r 5" on an angle & was scraping metal.
So I knew I either hit Water Line on a coin.
After I finally popped it out This is what I got.

Either Early Large Cent. face appears to be looking Right.
or Colonial Coin. Can't quite ID by the hair.

After Cleaning a little Better I'm pretty Sure I see 00
So I'm going to assume 1800

Re: 2 Hours at new site (Large Cent Detail Update.)

Great job Jeff, I can only dream of finding coins that old around here.

Re: 2 Hours at new site (Large Cent Detail Update.)

This turned into an awesome post, very nice Jeff. I use a bright video light and shine it from the side of the coins when taking pictures, it casts a shadow over the higher parts of the coin and defines it a bit more. HH and too bad about the scratch, Mike

Re: 2 Hours at new site (Large Cent Detail Update.)

Hey Jeff,my bad,now I understand,I thought you were talking about probing a coin you had already dug a plug for and that just didn't make any sense to me.I should have known someone such as yourself would know better than that.I think I have another old defunct fairground on the line,it was used from ?-the 1940's-50's then it was turned into a small airport so with all the security concernes I don't know if I'll be able to get permission but if so it should be a good one.I gotta get on it though cause they just bush-hogged it all so most of it is now detectable.Well, good luck on your new site and keep us posted, Bootsrap

Thanks & good luck wih that Fairgrounds.
10 years ago I would say you'll have no problem
Now ? hard to say. They just called a Bomb squad
in Pine grove tuesday night because someone dropped off
a package after hours at the post office :P
they probably destroyed something that somone
else purchased on EBay :-\
or was mis-delivered. I hope it wasn't my "Over-Due Book" :(

Any way, was going to head out at 8 today
but it looks & Smells like rain any moment
so going to try Friday.

Thanks Again to everyone !
Jeff

and 3 Property markers for the Borough so far.

one Wood Steak Corner Marker

one Surveyor's mark (Aluminum Plate flush with the ground)

and

One Original Steel Property Marker, about 8" below ground
level.

I marked them all by Decorating the areas
With Orange Ribbon, But was way too exausted
to tell them. I was afraid they would say
Walk us Up :P

Monday is another day.
I figure I'll let them tag along in the morning
when I'm on my way in.

Re: 2 Hours at new site (Large Cent Detail Update.)

Way to go on finding those boundry stakes man!Brownie points are always nice. That should ensure access for a long time.Alot of people don't realize what a service we detectorist can and do provide, keeping schools parks and beaches free of trash.I once found a furrow blade for a rototiller for a guy just cause he asked if I thought I could find it.He was pleased as punch.I also found my uncles wedding band for him,it was out in the woods somewhere close to a gut pile.He lost it gutting his deer and I really saved him alot of aggrivation as that was the second one he had lost doing the exact same thing,I think his wife would have brained him this time if I hadn't come to the rescue.I offered to try and find the other one and he said he knew approximately where he had lost it but we haven't went looking as of yet.Anyway, good luck on your new spot and I know you will be persistant and come back with some great finds to post! Later, Bootstrap

Fair Grounds Day 4

"Do you guys know this is Private Property ?" ???

Were one of the first sentences we heard this morning ;D

DKinPA & I went out today for a few hours.
Shortly after getting to our starting point
and starting to dig, I catch someone walking up
to me in the woods.
I smile & say "Hi !" he says nothing.
I nod & ask "How ya Doin' ?"

& he asks my Favorite Question :D

"Yep ! belongs to the Borough ;D"

he says he's not sure, But he owns land there
(Well, His Sister does) & his son just told him
there were two people in the woods
with detectors. We talked for about 45 minutes.
with him giving me a tour of the woods
behind his home, Showing me his Border lines,
Telling us he dosn't care if we detect up against his house.

I told him I was planning on talking to
him about his woods once I run out of
areas to hunt that I already have Permission for.
Etc.Etc.

Soooooooo, Now I have permission for the
Muscavage Property added.

What I think is a Musket Ball, but could be a Slug.
Not white, But does appear to have Teeth Marks.

!!!001.webp

and a Break Release Handle.
Must have been to stop the Horses on the Horse track :P
Actually I was told after cars were invented they also had
auto races here.
