Horse Track & Fair Grounds (Day 4 added)

rjnail Gave me a lead from back when he used to live
in Schuylkill County.

The site is now woods & owned by a Real Estate Company.
so this morning I headed out to their office to ask for permission.
had permission 60 seconds after walking in the office.

Next Stop was the Police station in town,
as the land borders water company Property,
Plus wanted to give them a heads-up in case someone
yells Terrorists Surrounding Them :P

Policeman said he could not give me permission
for water company land, for reasons, I just mentioned above.
"Paranoia" these days, But said IF I stray over the line
there would be no problem, as long as I stay away from
the Thing-a-Ma-Jiggs.
So he wrote up an Incident Report, & I gave him one of my
cards to tack fast to it, so any officers coming in later
would also know.
Before I left I advised him a Friend & I will be in there off & on
throughout the rest of the year, if the site starts Producing.
and he took me into his office & showed me an old
map of the Track & Fairgrounds. Very Cool officer.

Well for the first hour, I was wadeing through
Knee high Grass & ducking under over Grown
Park Shrubs, only digging Trash.
Lotta bullet Shells.

!!!!!!!!001.webp

Finally hit a spot with 2 Eyebrow pencils & a lip Stick

!!!001.webp

Found a Narrow road inside the woods
& decided to detect it & pulled out
a Penny 1981 which didn't impress me
so I decided to work my way out for the day.

Right before I hit the alley way I got what
sounded like a deep coin. but it wouldn't lock on &
the numbers read can tab area. but
because of it's obvious depth & because it was
between or under some large roots,
I couldn't pinpoint right, I decided to dig.
had to get down about 5" before my
probe could find it. From there I wen't down another
4 0r 5" on an angle & was scraping metal.
So I knew I either hit Water Line on a coin.
After I finally popped it out This is what I got.

Either Early Large Cent. face appears to be looking Right.
or Colonial Coin. Can't quite ID by the hair.

After Cleaning a little Better I'm pretty Sure I see 00
So I'm going to assume 1800

Re: 2 Hours at new site this Morning

Congrats, bud, on the Draped Bust cent! There should be some Colonials around there!

Re: 2 Hours at new site this Morning

Glad you got a keeper, and I love the information you shared on the lengths you go through to stop any problems before they start. Good luck, I look forward to more posts on future finds from the area. One large cent for every 2 hours of hunting would be great in anyone's book...Ryan

First Known Settlement in the area was 1747
& many farms burned by the Indians during French & Indian war.

Not sure when The Fair Grounds started,
But rjnail's finds of seated dimes 2 cent pieces 3 cent pieces v nickels
in I think the 80's says. there gotta be hot spots yet.

First I am glad you are not only moderating but also detecting.

Re: 2 Hours at new site this Morning

:o Nice going Jeff. I like the way you stop in and get permission and the cop sounded A-OK too. Now that you know where things were I'm sure you'll hit it hard and heavy. HH

Re: 2 Hours at new site this Morning

Nice going on the oldie Jeff, there surely should be a lot in your area, even my gggggrandfather Judge Daniel Yost farm was started around 1810 in the McKeansburg area.

When ever I am going to be hunting in a town,
that is big enough to be considered a City,
I like to have the police aware. if I were in the woods
Digging & a cop walked up behind I think I'd Jump :P
Because I won't hunt Without Headphones that Block
all outside sound.
Plus it was an Excuse to hand him a Card ;)

Yep McKeansburg isn't that far from where I'm detecting in Orwigsburg.

The greater part of the town was laid out in 1803, and the remainder in 1809. The town was named after Governor Thomas McKean. Warrants for tracts of land were issued to the first settlers as early as 1750, the Webb family, who afterward sold their interest to Peter Orwig in 1790, being the original owners. Others followed, and a strong fight was waged to make this town the county seat. When Schuylkill was partitioned from Berks to Northampton, Orwigsburg had one of its citizens in the Legislature and succeeded in getting the Court House plum. Judge Daniel Yost, a native of Montgomery County, was made a Justice by Geo. Snyder in 1809. He became one of the first Judges of the Court of Common Pleas in 1811. He lived and died in McKeansburg, where he is buried. The grandfather of the late Judge D. B. Green lived there. The ancestors of Judge R. H. Koch, the father of Banker Jacob Huntzinger, Joshua Boyer and Dr. J. F. Treichler, one of the first physicians prominently known in the County, who was engaged in active practice for more than fifty years, were among the early settlers of McKeansburg. It is related that when the commissioners appointed by the Governor to examine the rival towns, Orwigsburg and McKeansburg, arrived at the former place a ruse was employed to gain the advantage. Peter Frailey, Daniel Graeff, John Kobb, John Drehr, Phillip Hoy and others induced the nearby owners of saw mills along the creek that ran along the Borough to dam up the water supply for a period. At a signal from the men, the blowing of a horn, the flood gates were hoisted and the Manhannan had such a supply of water that the commissioners concluded that it would be an excellent town for manufacturing purposes and Orwigsburg became the County seat.

Re: 2 Hours at new site this Morning

Jeff, maybe these photos can help you, if not, here is a piece of history for your area. The Yost family genealogy is well documented and these photos came from my family booklet.
Hope they are of some use for you.
