One of my MAIN goals for this year was to find a Standing Liberty quarter, and I nabbed one after work this afternoon on a quick hunt!! And you'll never guess where I found her...right across the street from my house in the city easement of my neighbor's yard, which dates back to 1929, LOL. She's a no dater, and she looks pretty beat up, but she's all mine. ;D ;D ;D

The quarter just sang to my Silver uMax and stock coil at about 4" deep with the disc set to zinc, and it was accompanied by a pair of Wheat pennies and a U.S. military button.

Tomorrow I'm gonna have to go over it again with my 12x10 spider coil to see if there are any deeper targets, and also drop my disc down to see if I missed any nickels.

What a wonderful day you had. I am still looking for my first SLQ. Good job!

Nice finds and congratz on reaching one of your goals so early in the new year ... SLQs are hard to come by ( I've found one and its in worse shape than yours) ~ Jimmy

Ray:
You may have done better than you think. With my old eyes I can't see any of the three stars under the eagle; that means it's a 1916 or 1917. Another clue is that the eagle sits 'low' in your coin--as it does on the 16s and 17s.
Great find, notwithstanding.
Don........

Nice find; I was wondering about the three stars myself.

You may want to get that coin looked at by an expert. Even if there's no date, there is a way to tell if it's a 1916 type 1 or 1917 type 1 by how the foot are on the obverse and the position of the eagle's wings at the letters. I'm not an expert, but there have been complete no date SLQs identified as 1916 sell at auctions.

Ray your Lady is a beautiful find, even if she is dateless.

She obviously wants to keep her age anonymous.

Good times!

Very nice ,
I wish that there was a site that close to me holding sweet treasure, worn or not a great coin.

Hey Ray,
What a nice old girl!! You mentioned lowering your discrimination.
Try to go as low as you can, and you'll get more depth. If your in
a trashy area, you might want to try turning the discrimination to
zero, and start going up to where you just start to pick
up pull tabs. Then you won't miss any small gold items, and get a
bit more depth. Keep on swingin!!

Thanks everyone!!! I'm just so jazzed to have hit one of my main goals so early in the year. I've got to give thanks to God for that!! The really weird thing is, as I was driving home from work I was thinking to myself how ironic would to be to actually find an SLQ right across the street from my house! LOL

Makaydon, I think you may be right. It is either a 1916 or 1917. I did some quick online searching and the eagle is sitting lower than later SLQs, thus leaving no room for the stars. It also appears to have the mintmark of "M" on the lower right obverse. I noticed that some of these 1916 SLQs are going for some major bucks but they're in much better condition than mine. Makes me wonder how much a coin in this poor condition is worth if indeed it is a 1916????

Slabman, on the Silver uMax I've noticed that if I keep the disc between iron and foil I won't miss any good targets and still get good depth. Yeah, I could go all metal and dig every target, but it really wouldn't make a whole lot of difference depthwise.

Ray

Ray:
The "M" is the initial of the designer: Hermon A. MacNeil. The mintmark, if there were one, would be at the same level as the "M" but on Liberty's other side (left as you look at the coin); between the bottom star and the drape of her robe.
One way that others have used to differentiate the difference between an undated '16 and '17 is that on a '16, Liberty's head intrudes into the "dots and dashes" above her head whereas on a '17 it does not.
Don.........

Thanks Don. Yeah, I just noticed that M is not the mintmark. If there was a mintmark, I believe it would have been a P.

Here are some better closeups. (Sorry, only had incandescent light for lighting). Compare the "bun" at the back of the hair and the gown near Liberty's right ankle (which is on the left, looking at the obverse) to these photos showing a comparison between 1916 and 1917 SLQ features: http://www.anacs.com/contentPages/ShowArticle.aspx?ID=16

I still can't quite make out which mine is. Maybe someone else might see which of the two it more closely resembles.
