One of my MAIN goals for this year was to find a Standing Liberty quarter, and I nabbed one after work this afternoon on a quick hunt!! And you'll never guess where I found her...right across the street from my house in the city easement of my neighbor's yard, which dates back to 1929, LOL. She's a no dater, and she looks pretty beat up, but she's all mine. ;D ;D ;D

The quarter just sang to my Silver uMax and stock coil at about 4" deep with the disc set to zinc, and it was accompanied by a pair of Wheat pennies and a U.S. military button.

Tomorrow I'm gonna have to go over it again with my 12x10 spider coil to see if there are any deeper targets, and also drop my disc down to see if I missed any nickels.

You may have done better than you think. With my old eyes I can't see any of the three stars under the eagle; that means it's a 1916 or 1917. Another clue is that the eagle sits 'low' in your coin--as it does on the 16s and 17s.
Great find, notwithstanding.
Don........

I agree 16 or 17(Type 1)
Congrats !

That'is one dandy of a find Ray, and very rare one at that. Man you are lucky to have lots of opportunity not far from home, what a great way to have it. With you behind the handle that Silver U-Max is proving to be a dandy machine for sure, I have seen it hunt next to and with the best Silver machines. Heck, you found gold with it too. Keep up the good work.

How old is the US button?

You can proudly mark that one off your list, great find WTG!

Nice find Ray ;D

I have brought out the date on buffalo nickels with some acid applied very carefully to the date area. This is pretty worn and may not work. Just a thought--Mizer :o :o :o :o ;D ;D

That coin has a TON of character.

Well done.

Ray - i am going to hopefully make your day. I would say that you have a 1916 quarter there. The folds on the drapery above the 19 are one of the keys. I had the go back to one of my files dated Dec 4th 2006 out of Coin World for the proof. Look at the folds in the pic i enclosed. The 1917 pic is on the right and the gown curves at the base like a u. on the 1916, the gown had an axe kind of shape that points toward the ankle. Hope this helps. Send it to ANACS in Sarasota Florida to get it authenticated. They will encapsulate it and make your day.

Ray - i saw you posted some closeups and i can now see that this is a 1917.

Congrats! on accomplishing a goal so early in the year...
Good luck on that spot next time, & Happy hunting~

Ray:
There is no P mintmark on these quarters; only D and S; if no D or S, then it's from the Philly mint. Also, the rounded cuff of the robe strongly suggests the coin is 1917; probably (my opinion) from Philly mint.
Great find.
Don.....

Thanks everyone! I appreciate your comments.

Ant, yes I am really pleased with the Silver uMax, but no one out does you with that Gold Bug 2!! ;D

Mastersarge, I have no idea how old the button is. I've never been interested in buttons until I got my Silver uMax and started finding them. But I did learn this was a collar disc, but I know nothing more than that. Maybe I should put it up in the button forum for identification?

Cable, yes, a coindealer told me I could do the same thing, but not on my first SLQ! LOL

Buffhunter, thanks for the pictures. I think you may be correct in that it is a '17. The robe looks too rounded by the ankle, but then the bun throws me off. But it could just be the wear that makes the bun appear similar to the 1916 coin.

Don, I thought I had read somewhere that some of these had a P mintmark, but you're right they don't.

I did take my coin to a coin dealer in Redlands yesterday to see if he could possibly ID it. The guy was absolutely useless. He didn't even know there were any differences between the 1916 and 1917 SLQs!! I think Buffhunter is right...I'm gonna have to send it in to ANACS to be absolutely sure.
