Hi all-
I don't get much time to hunt right now with all of the things going on in my life, but I did get out a week or so ago and dug a bucket lister.... a 10# Civil War Parrot shell!
Being a relic hunter I always dreamed of finding an artillery piece, but until now I was never in the right spot to have a realistic chance at finding one. My chance finally arrived as the latest Diggin' In Virginia event was held at a battle site known to have produced a fair number of unexploded shells through the years, so I along with Gtoast99 spent our entire hunt looking for them. Early on in the hunt I located what apparently was a shell which exploded underground, as it appeared to be in numerous parts but all concentrated in one hole. That was exciting but not exactly the way I had hoped to find a shell....
Tony (Gtoast99) was the first to find one and it was awesome to witness the excitement of him finding his first shell. Shortly after the excavation of his while hunting nearby in the same field I heard a near overload signal. 27" below the surface and a lot of careful digging later revealed what turned out to this awesome piece of history.
The pictures show it uncleaned... since I'm not an expert as to the best handling practices of them I didn't scrape off all of the clay that was caked on the sides. It was given the next day to a professional for disarming and restoration... I should have it back by Wednesday and when it arrives back in my possession I'll be sure to post a cleaned up picture.
Thanks for looking.
