How do you go about finding where the railroads of the 1800's had their work camps? I thought about walking into railroad office buildings near here but really don't think the receptionist would be able to help me too much. Is there an archive of maps that would show where the railroad workers lived while building the railroads? I would love to find a couple camps to detect.

Railroads won't allow you to trespass on their property. You could check the old right of way maps in the township or county offices. Don't forget to look for insulinators from the poles. They are collectables too.

Outback, I see there were three railroads that ran through Olathe and Johnson Co. in 1887. I'd think the camps would be near the tracks as well as near water probably. Don't know that this would help any.
