Re: how does......

Good Morning liftloop,

I've not heard of a "Trap Sluice" though there is the "Le Trap Sluice" and the AU gold trap sluice by Angus McKirk. Both of these are "drop riffle design" sluices. Basically the riffle drops into the bottom of the sluice, the riffles do not stand above the bottom of the as do the Keene sluice boxes. OK, so that picture may look a little muddy so let me try another explanation. Let us assume there is a 4 foot long by 8 inch wide pine board and we take a circular saw and cut grooves across the board the 8 inch width of the board. Lets say we leave a half inch space between each groove. These grooves are "Drop Riffles", the heavy materials "drop" into the riffles or grooves. The grooves can be different widths, 1/8", 1/4", 1/2" as examples and "Astrobouncer", a Tnet member, has posted many a picture and video about the drop riffle sluices he builds and uses, check them out. Also just Google "trap sluice" and see what comes up.

But there may be a sluice that is called a "Trap Sluice" so lets see who else posts on this thread.

Good Luck as it sounds like you are getting interested, 63bkpkr

Hi Again LL,
Check out my pictures in the sluicing area in the thread Trip & Results or something like that it is not far down from your current post. The last few pictures show how I backfilled my prospecting location. I did this so the spring floods would not wash the entire hillside away, nobody made me do it I just chose to do it. It was a lot of work!!!!! BUT I felt I could not tear up the hillside without doing something to protect it. Again I was concerned about the place I was at and I wanted to conserve it for others. Oh, and yes there is still gold there so why let it get washed back into the river.

I think you will find the same is true for you in Michigan, prospect and then backfill to preserve the countryside. It is sort of like coin shooting in the city, one must fill their dig site or else the parks and city homes will be closed off to metal detectorists. Now I do understand your thoughts about finding a spot on a river, a stream or a dried up channel and just digging to your hearts content as I did just this at my spot however, I do recommend back filling the site.

Man, with winter coming on your prospecting time will be a little short. To speed up my prospecting at the site above I metal detected my raw dirt and when I got a signal I panned that material. The raw material I did not get a signal on I mostly did not touch though I would not recommend this for all situations. I would guess that in your coin shooting you have come across a chewed up gold ring or some 10K or 14K ear ring. Use a small piece of your current found gold as a test target so you can set up at least one of your detectors to tell you when your diggings have gold in them. I used a piece of a gold ring that was about 1/8' x 1/8" and securely glued it to a colored poker chip, this is my test target. Also, in my post above check out the RESPONSES on How To Properly Use any Sluice box as the responses are a text book on how to use a sluice the right way. I own a Keene A52 but I'm interested in the Angus McKirk AU Trap Sluice as it is a drop riffle type and the cleanups are much easier than for the A52.

All my best, 63bkpkr

Liftloop,

I not sure which "trap" sluice sluice you are referring too, if you could be more specific I will tell you what I know or can find info on, would it be the "Wolf Trap Sluice"?

Here's a little reading/info for you on gold panning in Michigan, just so you know most of the gold you can find in Michigan is going to be small. but you may get lucky and find a picker or two in the UP which has natural gold deposits and glacial gold, Lower Michigan has gold as well but it is all glacial gold and will be small/fine gold.
