How many 1965 Quarters have you found? 1960- 1964, where the heck did they go?

I have never found silver quarters from 1960- 1964, where the hell did they go?
Did people hoard them up?
Did people stop losing them?
Are they heavier then other quarters, thus sinking beyond my Explorer's reach?

I hate 1965 Quarters

they were melted down in 1982

Having a hard time finder any quarter older than 1965 as well. I deal with cash on a daily basis and yet to find one....dang those hoarders and melter downers!!! >:(

But does not stop me from continuing to look for them.

You could be right about the hoarding. In the early 60's when the word got out that
they were going to quit making silver money, and the first 4 or 5 years after 1964,
the public started stashing the silver coins. My dad had a friend who ran the pinball
machine business in the smaller town I grew up in. He started throwing all of the silver
quarters into 5 gal buckets. Then, in the late 70's when the Hunt boys tried cornering
the silver market, and the price of silver skyrocketed, he sold all of the coins for 1.4
million dollars.
The sad thing is that tons of silver coins hit the smelter because thier silver value
surpassed thier numismatic value. What a terrible job that would be... melting good
silver coins! :( :( :(

Agreed!!! I find so many 65 quarters still in circulation today. How many 64's do you find? Not many at all! With so many 65's still being used, you will find a lot more of them then you will a silver 64 that was lost around 1964 or a little later.

Just because the quarter is a 65, doesnt mean it was lost then. I have picked up 65's off the top of the ground.

Very true on finding those 65's....I find them in our tills everyday.....they are just as abundant as the 2000 + state quarters.

By accident, we assume or the customer just did not know what they had....one of my cashier's was given a quarter, that when she dropped it in the till....it rang!!! She asked me and I told her to keep it...it was SILVER...but I can't remember the year, but it wasn't a 60's.....for some reason, 1932 comes to mind, but I could be wrong....that is the only one that I know of that came through. I'm sure others have, but they just don't know what to look for (my young cashiers).

So....I have decided to look :):):)

65' is the oldest I've found too. I have 4 or 5 of them.
What did happen to 60-64 quarters?

Keep safe...

I also find LOTS of 1965 quarters but I have found 6 silver quarters in the past year I've been detecting...3 - 1964's, 1 - 1954, 1 - 1942 and a standing liberty with no date visible.

I've found a four or five '65 quarters since I started this hobby a couple months ago...

I must be REAL lucky because I've also recovered two silver GW's in that same time!!!

I found 25 last year and 4 so far this year.

So they are out there at the older places.

It's a needle in a hey stack if you expect to find one in a newer place...

I hunt areas that are from the 20's - 50's ..

I recently found two 65s in the same hole in my backyard. I was think just one year later and I would have been very happy. Oh well...I guess that is what makes this hobby so fun. If every item dug was a keeper there would be nothing to look forward to...

Hey Mike, I'm pretty sure I have at least a good 25+ 1965 Quarters from digging this year alone.........they always come out, and you just have to hate them. Even in change I find them.........and for some strange reason, they sometimes have a real almost silver look. They are eye catchers, I think that is why we notice them. As for the 64 and before, I'm pretty sure everyone got their shot at taking them out of currency.

There were 1.8 BILLION 1965 Quarters minted! That is why there are still a lot in circulation today.

I think the other factor with finding silver Quarters - they are a lot easier to detect and if the place has been hunted they are hard to miss. If you hunt old parks that have been hunted before - hunt in trashy areas. I have pulled some silver quarters from these areas in hunted out parks.

If it WAS a 1932, check to see if that quarter is a Denver or San Francisco mint. Key coin worth a lot of $$ ;)

Oh I wish I could. Megan has since left and went back home to Tennessee. Her and her b/f broke up :(

I really wish I could remember the year, and for some reason that date sticks in my head...this was back in March time frame. Only wish that old guy came through my line!!! It was a much older man who gave her the quarter. I just hope she hangs onto it and does not lose it....gonna' ask my manager tomorrow if there's a way to reach her...if she has a forwarding addy for her...would like to know if she still has it and if I can reach her...found out what year it was and the mint. Thanks ;)

I read somewhere that when the mints switched over to clad there was a shortage of change nationwide. That being the case the dies to produce 65, 66, 67, coins were used until they wore out, meaning that new 65, 66, 67 coins were produced until 1968 accounting for the vast number of these dates in circulation and an inaccurate mintage count of these dates. supposedly the practice was discontinued in either 1968 or 1969.

Can't remember where I read this????

I think you guys are correct about hoarders, .... yes, I am guilty.
I have rolls of the 60 through 64 Halves, Quarters and Dimes. Not many but a couple of each mm from each year.

I did sell off a BUNCH when silver hit $18.00 about 1980 and got my teeth fixed. Best investment I have made in my life.
