How many lead fishing weights is too many?

I think I have more than that! I got 65 of them on one hunt a while back. Found 3 gold rings in with them, so, I guess it was worth it! I like finding pockets of them. It tells me that other targets of similar weight (like gold) are likely to be close by.

this is one years worth from a few yrs ago - the containers are about the size of gallon milk jugs
I used a bunch years ago and made my own weights for dive belt - years ago
I sold abunch at a yard sale and gave a bunch away - I have about 160 lbs left now

add up fast when you get this many in a hunt

That's quite a collection. Never thought of using them as a display. Usually I just give them away to the first fisherman I see who doesn't seem to have an attitude. The rest I throw into recycling. Too late now to start a collection.

I usually use the weights I find as a conversation opener with the fisherman I encounter. Its a good information bargaining piece. A typical encounter for me will involve the opening offer of free weights followed by a few questions such as if they have seen any other hunters on the beach and where, or if its a beach i'm not familiar with I ask where the hot spots are on that beach were people tend to concentrate/party/bunch up. Every now and then you'll get a good tidbit of info. Best tip I have received so far was where a bar used to exist on the beach front. Searching around the outskirts of the now empty lot produced a bunch of clad, garbage and silver keepers (mercs, quarters, etc).

Wow, thats a lot! if they are in good shape I keep them. Otherwise I toss them out with the junk at the end of each dig.

I give them away to my son who fishes and I save all the lead pipe and old lead chunks I find in fields and old home sites. Curious to see how much I can accumulate.

I can say I have only found one gold ring mixed in with the fishing weights this year... most of the places I hunt the gold is near by but not so close that they are mixed in, 30 to 40 feet away...but you could tell there was a directional push of the targets. Has a lot to do with the shape...not the weight here...

At the ocean, a different story. When the cut gets down to the sinkers you know your in the sink area of heavy objects.

The scrap yard here pays .40/lb but I see used sinkers on craigslist usually $2/lb.
