I live in New York. Outside of NY City, you only need a permit for a handgun. In NY City, you need a permit for all firearms. The bad guys don't bother with that formality. They just get the guns & use them on the unarmed populace. All our politicans care about is getting face time on TV to complain about how the bad guys are getting the guns. They don't care about our 2nd amendment rights or us having the ability to protect ourselves. They want us to depend on the police who arrive at the scene of the crime 99.9% after the crime has occurred & the bad guy is long gone. There are basically 2 types of permits, range which allows you to keep your weapon at home & go to the range to use it there or carry. The carry permit is for people who carry or have large amount of cash with them. Examples would be a businessman who has large amounts of cash at the store or who makes large cash deposits, armored car personnel, etc. It scares me how clueless some of the people who get these permits are when it comes to the use of firearms. And than of course there are the celebrities who get these permits much easier than the general public. I hope this clarifies things a little bit. NY is big on political correctness. God help us all.
