Got out for a short hunt yesterday at a local park. Lots of clad, foil and pull tabs, as usual.
I've been putting all the pull tabs I find in a jar and emptying the jar when I find gold, just as a reminder to myself of how many of them I can expect to dig up in between gold finds.
This is the longest dry spell I've had yet since I started doing that. Never had the jar even half full before.

Finally the drought has ended!

Time to empty the jar and start over.

Hopefully I won't have to dig that many again.
Oh, and the ring rang up at 27 on the Legend.
Anybody out there swinging a Legend will immediately recognize that VDI as a common one for pull tabs.

In March of 2009 a group of YTC members went to Puerto Rico and found where Pull Tabs can be harvested at some beaches. The things you can learn while metal detecting!
May the ring of gold be in your ears and its glitter in your scoop!

How many were in there?

Well, I wasn't really planning on counting them, but since I titled the post that way I suppose a count was due.
602 is the tally. My back aches just thinking about it.
What's this one has to dig X amount of tabs for every gold.
Sir you were double that I'm sure.
Hope the next one comes @ 100 tabs or less.

What amazes me is that so many people feel the need to remove those pull tabs from their soda or beer cans. What's the point? Are they afraid it will come off and they'll swallow it? Just a compulsion?
Not getting jabbed in the nose every time you want to take a sip? :dontknow:

Ever get a lip caught in one?

Doesn't it also depend on the design?
These early tabs were designed to be removed.

Somebody didn't think things all the way through (or maybe they did). 🤨

I'm not up on all the history, but later, public pressure spurred tabs that could stay on the can.

I always scratched the head wondering why the different agencies collected just the tabs to fundraise to buy say a wheelchair when collecting the actual can would of been better.

A single monster tab weighs 0.313 grams, or 1450 tabs/lb.
When having the scrap yard I figured the average was 1730 tabs/lb.

So at the time those same tabs were 45 cents a pound
Pop cans were 47 cents a pound. (24 cans per lb.)

Tab = 45 cents
Cans=$33.88

In some places, they'd be competing with homeless folk who may depend on collecting cans for survival.

I agree it's less efficient, but it's also a (somewhat clever) way of cleaning up all those tabs that have been separated from their cans.

Thanks for sharing, Im still eyeballing a busy soccer field I want to hunt, its about an hours drive but cant wait to get started to clean out the tabs and strike gold !!
I have done very well in soccer fields for gold and silver jewelry, good luck!

I think that is a great idea! Really does show the work and determination you have to have to keep at it and digging so much junt before gold poops up, but it's SO worth it! Hope the ratio continues to decline!

Lol, just curious. Thanks! I kind of keep a mental tally as to how many pull tabs a person needs to dig to find a ring. Great job!
