• Evaluate how far you are from work.

When you do this, don’t think how long it takes to go home
on a bus, but rather think how long it would take
to get home if there’s no public transportation
and the roads are closed.

• Get a water resistant backpack to hold your possessions
in one place. Make sure it has multiple compartments and
that there’s a waist strap on, so you can safely move
around and run if needed.

Also, get some reflective tape and strap it on your backpack
so that search and rescue teams can spot you easier.

While you’re at it, get a poncho or another water proof
protection that’s easy to store in your backpack.

• Get Mylar sheets. These sheets, also called space blankets,
are very thin and lightweight and can reflect heat,
meaning they can keep you warm in extreme cold.

• Have with you a small first aid kit, including painkillers,
antibiotic ointment, bandages, anti-allergic pills
and latex gloves.

• Have a small flashlight with you.

These days, you can find very small, but powerful LED flashlights
that consume less power and are the size of a small cell phone.

You can easily pack one in a pocket or somewhere in the backpack.

• Make sure to have a dust face mask with you.

During natural catastrophes, there are buildings crumbling
and lots of dust will be in the air.

At this point, you will really need a face mask in order
to breathe properly. One of these masks only costs
only a few cents, but it’s vital to have one with you.

• If you think you might be stranded, pack with you
an emergency phone charger that doesn’t need
to be connected to a power socket.

Being able to keep in touch with your family and
the authorities is essential.

Also, pack with you a map of your city or area, so that
you can have alternative routes available
for making it out safely.

• Have some money with you, especially in coins.

If stores close, your only source of food might be
automatic machines that sell water and food.
