how would i find ghost towns

I have the treasure Atlas from Thomas p Terry but it just names a lot of ghost towns i haven't been able to find any info online on any of the towns in my county, any ideas?

What area are you interested in hunting? Maybe I can pass along some things I know from my travels across America.

I usually like to start with the local library to learn about the history of the area. See if you can find old topos of the area and compare them to current maps ( NETR Online • Historic Aerials has some good old topos). Look for railroads, roads, lakes, rivers, streams, mines, towns, powerlines, etc. that were in one spot and then moved.

See if you can't find a nice chatty "seasoned citizen" of the area and ask about the history of the area.

Part of the fun of ghost town locating for me is the research and then going out and authenticating what I learned.
