You get a sense that he's just saying that just in case you find a ring and he's not looking around for it. Then you happen to find a ring.

Personally I try to avoid being seen digging something valuable, I have not had this exact thing happen, but I put my stuff in my pouch and I Never tell anyone what I have found, because then they don't know if you have actually found anything..
I've been run off sites on the beach by hotel guards who said that if someone lost something around these chairs, they might come back looking for it so they didn't want me looking and possibly finding something that someone else might come back looking for...

BUT UNLESS ITS ANOTHER DETECTORIST... I DON'T DISCLOSE WHAT I HAVE FOUND NO MATTER HOW BAD I WANT TO BRAG....
Sets a bad opportunity for someone to claim something..

If they cannot prove the ring is them, then it's yours! If they are so ride, just call 911...

I always casually scan around to see if anyone is standing close to me before removing a ring from my scoop. When removing, I'll cup the ring in my hand so that nobody can see, then it goes into my smaller pouch behind the main mesh pouch. Things in the main pouch can be seen due to the mesh, but the smaller pouch is behind the main pouch and things I put in there can't be seen.

I think this is something that's more prevalent when hunting the dry, since that's where most people are. When I'm hunting the wet or especially out in the water, there's usually nobody standing around or close to me, so it's less of an issue.

WHICH... is the absolute best way to detect anyway.

I hate seeing detectorists amongst other people at the beach... its rude and creepy looking to me ... always has been.
And its what ya get by doing so.

I agree to a point. I always prefer detecting where there's no people, just so I don't have to be stopped and answer the typical "find anything yet" questions, or be surrounded by a bunch of kids asking all kinds of questions. I actually don't mind the kids, they're curious and maybe one day one of them will be out on the beach swinging a coil, so being polite to everyone is my motto.

But that might not always be possible. Depending on when a guy can get out on the beach to detect, there might be people that he'll have to detect around. That's why I prefer hunting the wet and the water, usually less people than on the dry. But I'll play Devil's Advocate by saying that just because we have a detector in our hands, doesn't mean that we have any less rights to be there than all the other people, and all the kids' digging holes in the sand to make sandcastles.

To me, what is rude, is setting up 2 umbrella's side by side, to accommodate our family, and having people walk right through the center of our umbrella's, or walking on our towels we have laid out, instead of just walking around. To me, walking through another person's setup on the beach is rude.

A long-time detectorist told me that if someone claims the ring you just found is his, even if he doesn't know what it looks like, and he calls the cops on you, they'll make you give him the ring. I don't know if this is true or not, but it's why he said he never examines what he finds until he gets to a less public space. I guess you could say that you just found a really pretty bottle cap and hand that over. What about this ring here? Oh, I found that yesterday at a different beach.

That's BS. Cops don't have that kind of authority. If they did do that, they could be named in a legal action for things like usurpation of judicial branch authority, financial loss and so on.

OBXmetalDet: "I actually found a ring. This is pretty cool. I can't believe I finally found one."

DD: "Let me see it."

OBXmetalDet: "No, that's ok."

DD: "That's my ring. I lost a ring around here."

OBXmetalDet: "You didn't say that before."

DD: "Come on man. That's my ring."

DD: "It's an average sized ring (or some other vague answer)"

OBXmetalDet: "You should be able to give me more detail than that."

DD: "That's my ring." (avoiding my question and simply restating his claim)

I suppose that if someone was that dumb to waste an officers time by coming out to the beach, then I’d probably stay out in the water for a few hours while they wait for me. Lol. Seriously though folks. 32 years of law enforcement says it’s finders keepers and you are not getting the item back unless of course they can prove it right there on the spot. I.E. inscription or whatever. Never a better feeling than giving an item back to the rightful owner for free of course. I’ll never tell anyone they owe me for finding an item for them. I’d say if you are in for it for the cash reward ya might not be in the hobby for the right reasons. Just saying. Jgas

I found a nice camera back in the 70’s along the road with extra lenses .
I placed a ad in the local paper and had numerous calls but no one could identify it or lenses or bag.
So, I took some nice pictures for years from the find.

It’s funny for me reading these posts. I’ve only hunted abandoned farms here in Central IL on and off for over 30 yrs. In that time I’ve never had a single person approach me while detecting. Unfortunately, I’ve never found a ring either!🤣
