How'd you get hooked?

New guy / first post:
Began CRHing about 2 months ago in an effort to get silver at 1 x face vs. the 25 x face I've been paying. Had no idea this was a "hobby", but glad to find others hooked on this activity. I know how the addiction spreads as my wife and kids are now fighting me over rolls of halves. :o My question is: How did YOU get started in CRH?

Re: How'd you get hooked?

About 1979 or 80 I got caught up in the silver craze when in high school. Prices peaked up around $40+ an oz.
Slacked off a bit for almost 30 years and when I heard silver was inching up again, ($7-10) I picked up where I left off. The first week or so I found my first Babs in a roll. I was hooked...again.

Re: How'd you get hooked?

got a buffalo in change from a teller at my local bank. I asked how often do you find these? she relpied... they pop up more then you think. then i decided i wanted to find them all... now here i am...500,000 coins searched later sitting with some silver and wheat's and buffalo's... happy as a clam

Re: How'd you get hooked?

Got a metal detector for Christmas 2 years ago. Started online researching about metal detecting. Found Tnet and stumbled upon the CRH forum. I'm still going strong at almost $500k searched in just under 2 years.

Re: How'd you get hooked?

I started out by dumping out my coin bowl out in the middle of my closet floor one life-changing night in May of this year. It was about 400 bucks worth of my "end-of-day" pocket change and I had decided that there could possibly be some old coins in there..... Old enough to be Silver! I found a pre-64 dime and also a quarter. That was it for me, little did I know what was about to happen. Wow! I am 29 yrs old, and never in my life has a hobby grabbed hold of me with this type of grip... Ever. I have since started MD'ing too, and when I bought my minelab etrac in September, I had already found enough silver coinage to pay for it a couple of times over.... (Not that I used any of my silver to pay for it, but having it sure made Momma feel a lot less freaked out about me spending that kind of money on a detector. Especially considering it was a hobby I knew nothing about, and hadnt ever done before).

fun thread.

Hi Guys; I've got to try this myself. ----

By the way guys. New Mint Error. The 1987 Lincoln Cent has various degrees of doubling from a single letter all the way up to COMPLETE TOTAL REVERSE Doubling. I believe the Market is still trying to figure the price ranges on them ok. What are your strategies for the best type banks to Order your Rolls at ?? Is it Old banks vs New ??? or Get them in the Suburbs vs the City ?? or The Small bank vs the Big banks ??? Thanks. PEACE:RONB

Re: How'd you get hooked?

I started out metal detecting and never really had any great luck, just clad. Had detector issues one day and it just turned me off of detecting, but I will go back. Then I came across coin roll hunting on a forum and thought I'd give it a try.

Re: How'd you get hooked?

found out about it from a friend, first bank i stopped in had $7 in loose halves, of which I got 2x64 and 5x40%'s

I was instantly hooked! Mostly I do boxes of halves now and CWR dimes. There isn't much for CWR halves in Los Angeles.

Re: How'd you get hooked?

Got outta the Marines, had no hobbies. Went to hobby lobby and picked up some coin books. Went to the bank to get some quarters and dimes. 2 rolls in, I found my first silver dime ever and it was a mercury. Did some quarters and found 3 silver canadians. Now I have an addiction. Haha. :hello2:

HH all,
Cody.

Re: How'd you get hooked?

I walked into a bank looking for $2 bills. The teller didn't have any, but said "I have some halves. Two rolls of them."

I bought what he had, got them home, and even though I knew there was something different about the coins, I had no idea that they were silver.

I posted my finds on a totally non-treasure forum, and while no one could tell me that they were partially silver, one poster referred me "to a pretty cool treasure website where a bunch of people looked for coins after they bought them from banks."

So far, those halves have been the only solid rolls of silver I've ever found.

It is hard to believe that I found that solid roll just about one year ago.

Re: How'd you get hooked?

Decided to run a Google on Silver Investing one day in late January of this year, which led to my finding out about pre 82 Copper Pennies, as well as pre 64 Dimes and Quarters and pre 70 Halves. I sorted out my Copper Pennies and eventually(like in a day or two) decided to try for Silver. I went to my only bank at the time to ask for Halves. The first one they showed me was 1969, and I recognized it as a 40%. Next words from me were "Oh my gosh, I want that!" Turns out they had $2.00 in Halves, $1.50 in 40% and $0.50 Clad. It felt incredible to walk out of that bank with almost a half ounce of Silver for $1.50. From there I thought it would be totally easy. It was harder than I thought, but it was worth it.

Re: How'd you get hooked?

I was a cashier a few months ago and I would always replace any coins I thought were interesting from the register, including foreign coins and wheat pennies. One really slow night by myself, I decided to see what the oldest coin in my drawer was. While searching every date, I thought it was odd that there were lots of 1965 and newer dimes and quarters but I didn't have anything prior. I figured it was just lower mintage figures and ignored it. One night though, I finally came across a 1958 dime. I took it home and looked up the value and I was very surprised by the value for its silver (this was just the week when silver peaked earlier this year. From that night on, I checked the dates of every dime and quarter I could. It was a few more weeks until I learned the rim checking technique. I was laid off from my cashiering job but now I have a new one and the money I make often goes to the hunt.

Re: How'd you get hooked?

I started a long time ago when I was 6 or 7 years old. When my parents had to go to the bank, I always went. I went into the bank and got 4 or 5 rolls of pennies, sometimes 2 or 3 rolls of nickels. And of course, half dollars. I was a smart kid. My father and mother always bought me the half dollars and sometimes extra rolls of pennies. My father and mother were never into coin collecting, but he knew it was a hobby to keep me away from bad things. And it sure did. Never drink, never smoke, just CRH. :headbang: :icon_pirat:

I got More serious when I turned 15, got a job, and could actually afford denominations larger than $10. Now look where I am? 2 boxes of halves coming next week. :hello:

Re: How'd you get hooked?

I found this site while surfing the net...not even sure what I was looking for. I had collected coins (mostly pennies and nicks) as a kid, but hadn't done it for about 25 years. I started reading about half dollars as I didn't know much about them. Decided to order a couple boxes and give it a try, and still going at it a year later. Only wish I had started earlier.

Re: How'd you get hooked?

I found my first silver Mercury when I was maybe 6 years old. My parents were doing yard work and they pulled up a huge shrub near our front door and a small silver disc slid to the bottom of the hole. I picked it up and have been hooked ever since.

I metal detect to find silver but found it's sometimes just as easy to CRH and get better results and less dirty. CRH is an addiction to me, whether it's silver, wheaties, or just plain old pre-1960 nickels. I love it!

Re: How'd you get hooked?

Back in May I had some extra money sittin' in the bank drawing hardly any interest. Then I saw one of those TV commercials talking about how now is the time to invest in silver. So I found a coin shop and bought some silver rounds. Then I heard about CRHing and thought it would be a good way to increase my profits. One day the guy at my local coin shop told me about copper pennies. So I started sorting cents. Then the guy told me that he buys copper pennies. Copper became my way of buying silver for half price. Now I've gotten into collecting pennies, quarters, halves, and ASEs. Since may I have accumulated about 90 troy ounces of silver and almost filled one penny Dansco and most of another. I'm working on collecting the silver proof State Quarters now. Basicely it's all about the silver but I have managed to pick up a couple of AGEs along the way. I just realized that I have a sickness. Help!!!!!!! :tongue3: :laughing9: :help:

HI usandthem; Thanks. Nice Sickness. ----

I think I'm going to get VERY sick. !!!!! :laughing7: PEACE:RONB

Re: How'd you get hooked?

I've always been interested in coins and I think I got my first wheaty when I was about 10. I just jumped back into coins when I was 14 and found TNet. The most helpful site I have found in my life, I am currently not doing much CRH'ing as I'm in high school, but I enjoy this hobby a lot! I have found a few wheats and found som nice looking early 60's nickels but that about it, but during Christmas break, I think I'm going to start up again :icon_thumright:

Hi KO; Cool. -----

Let Us Know ok. PEACE:RONB :icon_thumright:
