Got out for about 5 hours with Freddy67 today. Spent 4 of those on a brand new site that was quite exciting, as soon as I "stumbled" on it I dig up a complete shoe buckle frame. No guts, (boo-who), but probably my best so far.

Button, button, then came a nice green GEO II which has a readable date, 1753, best GEO II of the year.

Dug a few more holes. then I pull out the largest flat button I ever seen, it's fully 40mm, the size of an 8 reale, still has gilt on it's design, stand up shank , and not the slightest bend, and a pretty overall green. It's perfect.

All in all a most excellent hunt, and just in the nick of time, snow, and cold is on the way.

The IH, came from a different place on the way back, and is the first of the year, and it too is "decent".

The lot.

Not included 4 musket balls, and another of the fancy plates. (can't spell that word)

EDIT: As I usually like to have at least one group pic. with dirt I'll add one of the button as it appeared from the dirt, a frame from short video clip. Notice how sunny it was.

Good Luck Out There.

Yep Rick your post made me bust out mine and measure them the largest i have is 38mm so 40mm is truly a monster

Maybe even a Colonial Dandy record..
I will now submit your find to the Guiness Book Of Metal Detecting Records..

Haw Haw.

here is a vernier measurement. (Note I got a new CF bulb, and the color takes some getting used to, weird)

Liking the new measurement device got in the stocking this year Rick, tried it out on some buttons but 33 was it for the ones that were handy. To cold to dig into the storage finds now, as the old man has arrived. Those light bulbs sure do take a bit to get use to, replaced most all of them now as I hated waiting to see what I was looking for.

Great stocking stuffer P.J. the digital Vernier will come in handy for many things besides MDing. I do prefer the older type (no batteries to go dead) but most people would not be able to read those. I worked in machine shop for 20+ years.

As far as those compact floursents (SP that) go, the last one was much more "normal" this one is like being on the bright side of the moon !! (smiley face)

Yep old man (winter) is here, I've blown snow twice now, no detecting in sight. (tear smiley)

I even measured mine since everyone else is measuring theirs. Mine is 35mm, colonial dandy button, that is.

I think yours is a record!!

Nice finds, it was a great day for detecting that's for sure. The button looks really nice cleaned up. Cheers Rick

Just had to recheck some of my larger flat buttons, many around 36-37 in my one display, with the largest 1700's era one being just over 38mm. The largest button in my collection is a hair shy of 42mm. Suspect it is from the 1800s though..

I did too until I measured about my 5th biggest to see it was only 33mm.... and knew the rest weren't 10mm more. But that is just the handful of designed ones... plain, no idea.
