Got out for about 5 hours with Freddy67 today. Spent 4 of those on a brand new site that was quite exciting, as soon as I "stumbled" on it I dig up a complete shoe buckle frame. No guts, (boo-who), but probably my best so far.

Button, button, then came a nice green GEO II which has a readable date, 1753, best GEO II of the year.

Dug a few more holes. then I pull out the largest flat button I ever seen, it's fully 40mm, the size of an 8 reale, still has gilt on it's design, stand up shank , and not the slightest bend, and a pretty overall green. It's perfect.

All in all a most excellent hunt, and just in the nick of time, snow, and cold is on the way.

The IH, came from a different place on the way back, and is the first of the year, and it too is "decent".

The lot.

Not included 4 musket balls, and another of the fancy plates. (can't spell that word)

EDIT: As I usually like to have at least one group pic. with dirt I'll add one of the button as it appeared from the dirt, a frame from short video clip. Notice how sunny it was.

Good Luck Out There.

Love those huge dandies Rick, and I think you've gotten my biggest one beat by a couple mm. Nice coin too. And is that thin brass item a piece of furniture hardware?

Was just sitting here wondering what it the largest flat buttons ? out of say 500+ that I have dug this is the biggest, and I believe the next size down I have is 33mm...Anyone ? I may PM CRUSADER for his thoughts as he digs 2,000 per year.

Furniture hardware I imagine as per Johnny B's image.

38mm is my biggest & the biggest I've seen, so 40mm is a new record in my books, & at least we now know the new biggest to beat, although I don't think it very likely.

PS. We have had 2000+ but the new average is closer to 1500 a year.

Well there you go Rick, your claim to detecting fame. :)

That's a monster! Biggest i've found is 38mm like Cru's and i didn't thought there would be a bigger one. And it's a beauty too! Very nice!

Rick, what an amazing coincidence I just came across. I earlier made a reply about that piece of furniture hardware you found. Just now I was reading a book loaned to me by Dan, and came across the exact same escutcheon plate that you found (although the ends of yours are broken off). The one in the book came from the ruins of a tailor shop in southern NC. The plate and handle came off of a mid-to-late 1700s

20151227_160524.webp drawer. So now you know exactly what that item is.

I gotta measure some of my large ones.It must have been on a large heavy duty coat, cloak?
Something like these this painting is the first painting that made me emotional starring at it.. So detailed i feel as if i am there..Breathtaking..

I'll say this, I am pleased with the find, as most I find are plain, the few that had any design had no gilt left, (at least on the front), and it being an unusual size adds up to something special.

I still like my avitar find, and the 1720 shilling.

THANKS CRUSADER !

And everyone else too !

THANKS Bill.

I have seen population reports from around here, I could scan, and show you, that show the majority as being American.
Here's one example, Horton Township total population in 1767 was 727 of which 697 were Americans. Interesting ?

Here's my 38mm dandy dug last spring. I'll have to look around to see if I can find one larger, but I doubt I can find one.

Hey Rick! I'm liking that nice ornate square buckle and big dandy button. That George-2nd is in fabulous shape. That's not always the case so congrats! (weren't we PM-ing about that not too long ago???)!

Steve

Those are some sweet finds! Keep the white stuff up there will ya, saw enough here over the last few years. Tired of raking my roof! LOL!

That monster dandy is a heck of a nice find Rick! I like the gold gilt in the sunburst pattern. Looks like you have a nice new site. I hope it keeps producing for you, even if you have to wait till spring!

Congrats on that awesome Dandy button and coins...nothing wrong with that buckle either.

Thanks Steve, I am a bit excited about this spot, no modern junk. Every other site has had finds for at least a couple of hunts so I am hoping too there is something left.

The "plan" is to get some small markers, like welding rods with a speck of orange tape on them, so I can do a more accurate grid. Not only on this site but on any site with promise. I can't wait for the next dig.

Nice job Rick, sounds like a marvellous spot. Cool buckle, exquisite copper, but that button certainly steals the show.

For designed, my largest is 37mm. I didn't start with my largest because I wanted to work my way up for the win :) ...but seeing my first only measured 33mm I knew there was no way I'd beat 40.

Most of my large ones are all 37mm, I do have a 42mm button I posted on this forum a couple years back, but not really from the same period.

Great looking dandy button,
