Ok where do I start.....what a fabulous hunt. The day was great the weather was perfect. The very first thing found was by my hunting partner and he got a 1885 seated dime, that got us both jazzed up, believe me the dime was 2" deep, he almost didn't dig it because he just dug several aluminum pieces all around it at the same depth!

then 2 minutes later, I found the Indian penny, it was beside a large tree and maybe 3" deep, I couldn't believe how shallow these coins were. What a beauty! you can clearly read Liberty on the headband, this coin is awesome shape. I was doing the happy dance I finally broke into the 1800's!!!
Then my second find I got a bouncy signal, it was pulltab, then penny back and forth. I said to myself I am digging who knows what it is, well 4" down I popped out this 18K ring, needless to say the happy dance was done again by me....My mom told me this ring is extremely old and the outside is coated in copper??? does anyone know anything about the markings inside the ring?

then to finish the day I got 2 wheats 1942, and 1944. My partner did not get anything else. He was more than happy to go home with the Seated Dime

Your mom is incorrect in saying that the ring is "coated with copper". It is just tarnished from being in the soil so long (yes, gold DOES tarnish).
so then why was the inside nice and shiny right out of the hole? I rubed it with my fingers and it gleamed in the sun, but the outside was green like an old penny???

Wow, awesome house. Nice finds. I wish some of the local mansion owners would give me permission.
have you ever asked? My hunting partner and I knock doors and politely ask, the worse thing that can happen is they say "no"

I've done alot of door knocking here locally as well as looking on the county website and tracking down owners by phone for property to hunt. Out of about 50 inquiries, I've had 2 people give permission. I know the worst that can happen is that they say no, but its kind of discouraging and makes it that much harder to keep asking. I just revert back to hunting public property or friends/relatives property. I was thinking of joining the Elks or Moose Lodge or VFW to make some contacts.

do you attend church by chance? I keep asking members of my church to hunt their yards as well, no one has turned me down yet.

Awesome finds!

I'd give anything for a house like that. That place is sooooo cool.

I second that wow banner for certain on that IH amazing condition one of the best if not the best dug coin I've ever seen.

Best wishes S.I.R

I cannot wait to go back, hopefully again this sunday

That is maybe the best-looking I.H. I've ever seen come out of the ground. OUTSTANDING!

the crazy thing is that was my first IH penny I have ever found, kinda spoils it for me, because what is the chance I will ever find one again like that......lol

Wow that Indian is MIND BLOWING. I love that house too.

Great job and congrats.....

Nice Indian head, great shape. The high relief is her necklace and liberty and usually the first to ware.

Great finds! I fully agree that I've never seen an IH come out of the ground looking like that - I'm embarassed to even show you the condition of some of the ones I've dug.

To me, that also means that the ground around where you live is pretty "good" to older buried coins (especially copper) which means you'll likely find more nice old coins all over where you live.

The ring has me a little puzzled. An 18K gold ring is 75% solid gold (18/24) - the other 25% more than likely does contain copper, but it's not terribly often that you see green on the outside of an 18K gold ring. I doubt very much that it was plated over with copper or anything like that. The lion is kind of odd too in that usually a lion is indicative of silver - although in this case, it could be something along the lines of a maker's mark too - dunno.

No matter what, you had an excellent day and I'd definitely be going back there asap.

Just as an aside - I don't know where you live, but when I lived in the midwest I got permission at least 75% of the time to detect in people's yards or fields - now that I live in the northeastern US, I'm lucky if I get 10% permission rate and it's usually much less than that. It's a different kind of attitude out here and it probably doesn't help that I don't have a NE'r accent.

very nice indian head penny! That is the most beautiful one i have ever seen! Very nice 18k gold ring also! ;D

Wow, that IH looks as if it had been lost just recently out of someone's coin collection. It's a beauty for sure!!

Congrats on your finds and on taking a pic of that Mansion!! :o
