Hunting by Shape alone

Creeks are super low right now. I’ve walked this one for over 10 years now. Owner collects also and once in a while joins. He said I’m the only person allowed so it does get lonely sometimes. Everything was broken today all bases. One insitu shows a worked tip. No picture. Unfortunately I have only found one big Savannah River whole over the years. Idk how big the knife would have been but it definitely would have been the largest I’ve ever found. The black chert I might have the other half somewhere and have to look. The pottery was super decorative. I’m not sure if it’s the same date as the SR points but all found together. On my way to the next spot I had a huge thorn rip on my arm and I had to leave. Hopefully I can walk the rest next time. The turtle was tiny and the spiders are all over.

I’m going to say Late Archaic on the Savannah River points. So the pottery could be the same age.

So on the pottery it might be a different age unless they got the dates wrong on the pottery or points. The pottery dates Middle to Late Woodland and the points date Middle to Late Archaic.

Quite a few years ago I decided I wanted to make a celt in the traditional manner. Peck and polish. I knew I needed a preform that was close to celt shape to begin with to save the maximum amount of time. I walked the river banks looking for celt shaped rocks. The river had sorted the rocks by size so I stayed in the zone with the medium size rocks. I didn’t go far when I spotted this. Perfect size but already finished by an Indian!🤩 Since it was on the river bank it didn’t have any plow strikes and it’s in perfect condition.

I then started walking the river bank looking for celts staying in the zone with medium sized rocks. In another spot a half mile away, I found these laying right next to each other.

Looking through piles of rocks sorted by size by the river has payed off. Just the shape being the key to finding them.

Those are really nice and hard to find. Good eyes to spot them.

I look for Celts while I’m flipping rocks in the middle. That’s how I’ve found both of mine.
That would have been a Huge SR if whole don’t you think? I haven’t washed it yet but I believe it would have been almost 8 inches long. I saw it laying under a low hanging branch and remembered saying what the heck is that. When I picked it up I said something else that I can’t print here 😃

Went back today to be sure I didn’t miss anything. I missed a couple of flakes. That creek is done until another flood comes.
