Hunting Crawdads

My Grandson & Great-Nephew hunting for crawdads.
They didn't catch any, but both managed to get water over their boot tops. :icon_sunny:

I'll bet that water was pretty chilly running into the boots.

Man, I ate a lot of cajun 'bugs in my day.....you ain't doin it right unless you suck the heads!

They both wanted to 'go swimming', believe it or not.
I'll leave the 'head sucking' to the hard-core crawdad eaters. 8)

used to put them in a coffee can on stove and boil them when we were kids.... YUM

Memories that last a life time.Ive never ate them,and I dont think I could do that head sucking bit.We use what we call soft shell crawdads for cat fishing,excellent bait,here in Iowa.

As one who was born and raised in Louisiana, I have caught many pounds of them in set nets in my youth. I still have the nets in my shop. Crab nets too. Haven't used them in years. (to many years) They make great bass bait when fished under a cork around some cypress knees or a great cook out for family and friends to get together and socialize over. Had many crawfish boils in my life time and still have the big aluminum pot my dad used to boil them in when I was just a tyke. Hoping to find a source locally to buy some this year. It would be great to find a place to catch them around here in Arkansas where I now live. That is a beautiful picture fossis, I am sure the boys had a great time...thanks for sharing!

PS. The fat in the heads absorbs the spicy water they are boiled in and the combination of the flavors is nothing short of fantastic! Don't knock it till you try it.

Thanks Capt, I let them camp in the tent that night in our front yard, they are action boys.
Our local supplier of crawdads was killed in a tragic accident when a bulldozer roller over on him while he was attempting to clean the bank of his pond.

Crawfish, Crayfish, Crawdads, or mud bugs. All the same. 10 gallon pot, crawfish, potatoes, whole garlic cloves, corn on the cob, onions, keg of Dixie, a big picnic table, and a newspaper. THAT is a great day!

We have a crawfish over here that is so sweet

, trouble is, someone introducd the American crawfish, and it is killing our natural ones. Good news tho', they have found some chemical or something that kills the American one and leaves the UK one alone. I have tasted both, and the UK/ European one is so tasty and so juicy you just want more. I need a good recipe for jumbalaya :laughing7:

Gotta put the can in the water on the downstream side of the rock. Lift the rock towards the upstream. The crawdads will back right into the can. Ahhhhh, the good ol' days.
