At beaches I do not dig the iron or small foil...

What type of MD are you using Smokey? Just curious what your VDI reads ...are you using a Minelab

I dug a lot of foil and pull tabs last weekend, just to see what would happen. It was frustrating and difficult, but I won’t soon forget the 2 gold rings I found. Fear not, the shovel will set you free.

It depends where I am , some places are so trashy I would be better off just digging with a shovel and screen than detecting. One recent place I detected I think an old structure had burned down , I took a magnet rake over about a 5x6 ' section and had over half a grocery bag of iron trash in a few minutes just within a couple inches from the surface, I did pull a few cool brass relic from the area but it was frustrating. In most areas I usually dig anything above iron unless I start getting 22 shells or pull tabs with repeatable signals , then I ignore them. If I am hunting in open areas like woods, desert or old trails with an old history, which is some of my favorite places, I will usually dig everything because many targets are at least something interesting and can lead to other stuff like old nails can lead to long gone structures.

I dig by tone and my gut but surely never dig every target. I know of no good targets I have missed because no one else ever found any in that place either..lol

I'd rather dig iron out of a cellar hole than dig trash in the sand.

Same here in a field. Clearing that iron takes away potential masking of non-ferrous keepers. Not to mention I think old iron can be COOL!

If your going to dig every target wouldnt it be wise to have a detector that just does one beep for every type of metal , no discrimination or readout ?

Absolutely! But.... if you're looking for gold, you can disc iron. If looking for coins, same thing. I dig all "beeps" (including trash) because it doesn't hurt to do some cleaning for next time at that spot. ╦╦Ç

You would think that, eh ? But for some reason: having a full-tone TID machine adds the fun, EVEN if you are intending to "dig all" (except iron).

As a mostly exclusive park hunter ( 150 years old park ) for three years, waiting to one day start door knocking, I hunt everything from gold to old and everything in between I blessed it has every possibility. I’ve gotten gold rings to CW dropped 3 ringers to 1800’s coin, but I dig and I dig a lot so I put in work to find the goods. I look at it as boot camp and when I have been blessed enough to piggyback of a friends permission I find it so easy and frustrate my permission friends. I’m gonna have to man up and go knock because I’ve paid my dues I deserve it. It’s wearing we out because the park has a lot of clay plus I MD ALOT. Lol
