I don't usually post spent shell casings but this one is a bit unusual !

This was still in my rainjacket pocket from my foundation dig yesterday. I came across it on my walk back to the truck. It was pretty deep for such a large Item, a good 8 in down . But in rang my ears like a jar of silver . I did a little research on it today and to the best of my ability I have surmised it is a WW I 1.45 in or 37mm artillary shell casing. The only marks I can make out is the .911. This Matches closest to a pic of a casing I found on big ordinance.com . They still used this round in WW II but the primer cap was not as simple and none of the marks matched up close to mine ! Just one of those unusual finds I thought you might enjoying viewing. Looks like a .9?7

If it wasn't such a long casing, I would have thought it was a starter cartridge for some of the WWII plane engines

Your casing is from a 37 mm antipersonal field gun. Very nice find you got there I have collected Artillery shells for many years and enjoy seeing a 37 mm caseing found .. Way to go keep digging

F.A. is Frankfort Arsenal made in 1911. Neat find!

Wow that is a nice one, You can see some of those guns in front of some of the V.F.W. clubs and also some of the National Guard Ammories.

Hey Maine relic, I know this is an ancient post but figured I'd help identify it. From the markings I can see (and the font of the lettering), it appears to be a french 37mm casing. Most likely ww1 era. How it ended up in Maine is beyond me. I think some people confused the last photo that you showed as an example, as a photo of what you found once cleaned up.
