I found a 1973 Canadian nickel that sticks to a magnet

I found a pretty beat up 1973 Canadian nickel that sticks to a magnet. The 1973 nickel is supposed to be made of nickel - not steel. This nickel is not supposed to stick to a magnet. Could this be a forged coin? Any ideas why this nickel seems to be made of steel?

Canadian nickels produced earlier than 1982 (except war time and other very old ones made of silver) are made of pure nickel which is indeed magnetic. Pre 82' Canadian nickels are worth holding onto for the nickel bullion.
