I found part of a George Washington I.D disk on my last hunt. I had no idea they existed. I thought it was part of a pewter spoon til I viewed it in silhouette.

I believe during the war. I found it in with these. It most likely got taken from a Union soldier. That's what I was told. Dead or prisoner I don't know. I thought it was junk. Some sort of trinket from town. I posted on a civil war identification group & that's what they said.

Still an amazing find, I read there were little towns on wheels that essentially followed the armies, setting up shops out of wagons, one of those shops was the guy selling these ID disks, and they would sell and engrave them to the soldier right there in the field. Yours may have been sold and engraved but the writing worn away by time, still a fascinating thing to imagine, life in those traveling camps.
