Good evening fellow detectors,

It was scorching hot today but I still braved the elements without a hat for 3 hours until my shovel broke. I tried a new approach today by taking the advice of another member. I set my Ace in the all metal mode and sensitivity almost to max. And I dug everything. I must now master this setting as I have just been using the coin mode until tonight. I just listen and look. Then did if necessary. My first hit was a large key. Looks like an old jail key or something important during it's time. The only coin I found was a 1971 memorial. I'll have to go back over the areas I have hunted and do some diggin. I have nothing but time to tackle this place. I'll be busy for months to come. Then when the beans are out I'll head to the woods and fields.

The next pictures are for you to see how much area I have to cover. The house and surrounding grounds that are maintained are approx. 4 acres. The fields and woods are 90 acres.

The old sidewalk where I found the large cent. There was a house there before 1900. I check that in the fall.

The next picture is my other hunting spot just down the road

The last 3 pictures are my next hunting spots. All pre-1900 homes except the one that just shows the barn. It's been gone for years. The grass is a little high but I'm sure I can cut it for the owner.

youve got some awesome looking site to hunt!! The key is great, with a lovely old patina

Thanks Marc and Burdie. I'm trying to find out how old it is on the internet. No luck yet. Any ideas??

Sweet key, CJH! Great pics, too. Love the house shot with the sun streaming in there sideways.:icon_sunny:

I would like to hear the theory on hunting at maximum sensitivity on the Ace. I've tried hunting in Coin mode but in noisy spots end up going back to All Metal because so many signals jump around. I fidn it easier to just listen for the individual tones.

Oh, I love that key...it's really unique. You have some great hunting sites there...love those houses. Good luck & happy hunting, keep us posted on your finds. I hunt in the all metal mode too, you will learn those beeps.

 RR

Sure looks like a jail door key huh? I wonder if they use to have a jail there? Great looking sites Good luck with them HH Tom

looks like you've got allot of hunting to do i have a place like that also lots of work in your future after they pick the beans you should walk the fields to see if there May have been other structures on that farm i walked some of the fields at my place found lots of old bricks like something was there talk to any old timers that live around there see if they share cropped or anything in that order cause they usually had a spot to pay everyone off at maybe some pocket change lying around in the fields somewhere at an old barn or something good luck and have fun HH

Nice site. Maybe the Bar was for tieing horses with a water tub underneath ?

Is this an old Inn ?

both my grandparents have the same bars in there yards, they are used to grow grape vines on.

Hey Crazy J. That key is gorgeous ! The properties that you have lined up to hunt , are what pretty much

all us t-netters are dreaming about having access to - AKA heaven on earth . Happy hunting !

Argentium.

Hi CJH,

I'm the guy who recommended that you crank up the settings on your Ace. Your No.12 shotshell dates back to 1900.

During the 1890s and early 1900s, many Winchester lines could be ordered with specific loads of either black powder or nitro powder. Some lines of loaded shotshells, such as

Leader and Repeater were two of Winchester's most popular and long-running lines of shotshells. Artwork appeared on the boxes into the 1940s.
Leader and Repeater, both introduced in 1900

Here's link to the history of them...

Ron,

Just remember that the place could be sold at any time, even if it has been for sale for quite awhile. Be sure to prioritize the areas most likely to produce finds, and detect them first. You never know what can happen. Don't take anything for granted. You may kick yourself later. Places like this don't come along every day. :)

Congrats on your great finds. Seize the moment!

Good luck and HH,

Dr. Ace

I've found it just the opposite. In all metal mode even toned down one notch I get alot of noise. But away from the house out into the side yard where there is not much clutter, I get an occasional blip. I tried coin mode set halfway but you won't find any deeper coins. So I took it all the way up with my large coil and been doing alright there. But with the all metal mode..... I have to get used to it. I have mainly been paying attention to the signal higher up more than the lower ones. That copper key gave off a signal around the penny and dime range... on the higher end. But the dull thuds on the lower end (iron) I have been passing over for now

My father who is in his 70's grew up in this small town. He said that they used to have a 1 man jail next door to my grandmother (95) present house. It was like a portable kind if that makes sense. This town is only around 500 residents with my grandmother being the oldest inhabitant there.

There was an old barn next to the corn crib, my father told me. But for some reason the ground around there is clay. I believe it was brought in during the building of the barn ???
