Well I was scrolling through my YouTube subscriptions and saw a new post by Beau Ouimette. It had a buckle that I immediately recognized as the thumbnail. It was exactly like the buckle I found on 16 Nov 14. At the time I thought it was part of tack for horses or a belt buckle with no real worth.(because it was near fairgrounds) Boy was I wrong! Beau informed me that they go for $100 and up! I have been kicking myself since finding this out. The lesson learned is do not through away anything unless you know FOR SURE that it is junk. At least I took a few pics before discarding it in the trash:BangHead: Here they are. I had to edit one pic because I wrote the location on the paper towel. The $2.36 was how much clad I found that day.

Sorry, I forgot to say what it actually was. It is a Civil War era carbine sling buckle.

Here is a link for one for sale.
Buckles

I saw a post the other day and someone had a threaded brass cap...they said is was a radiator cap from a Model T car...well, I thought the one I found was just a piece of hardware so I sold it with my other scrap brass this Summer :BangHead:...only worth about 20 bucks but I sure would like to have it for my relic shelf.

Wow, you scrapped a Civil War relic... that blows. But hey, at least you got a photo. And just think right now in some country far away that Civil War relic is being melted down and turned into something new. In a sense it will never vanish from this Earth, it will simply become something new - like a brass shell casing... and maybe it will see yet another battle field.

In this hobby it's best to be a hoarder! At lest until you know for sure what you have.
I was testing out my new gold test kit on some junk jewelry I had found and got the surprise of my life! Gold!

ahh man what a bummer, yeah you never know what you have sometimes!, well at least you still have the picture

That's a bummer! Thanks for passing along the lesson.

You guys should see my office, there is junk shrune from one end to the other. Ha I'd probably make it on that "Hoarders" show for my one room. I personally have not thrown out any buckles yet. Its kind of amazing how many I find. Sorry about your organizational skills, but in the big picture, at least it wasn't something worth thousands. Plus that price is what they are asking, things are only worth what you get for them.

When I started detecting 45 years ago, I threw away anything that wasn't copper, silver or gold. I realized later that one of my spots was a huge Civil War camp and I had tossed some items that were BIG $$$. Live and learn. Tony

Trust me, you don't want to see my hoarder table outside, LOL.
I'll try to get ya a pic later, I think it's going to rust apart. :laughing7:
Yep, I've found 10k white gold, mixed in with my "junk". :hello2:
I think that was why I was :icon_scratch:, when I found a quarter in the bathtub, after the Mr showered, I kept thinking, "Where'd that fall out of"? :laughing7:
Good we can all learn from this lesson....... ty.

I don't really get the thinking because what would be wrong with keeping that even if it was only worth 50 cents. It's something, it's old, it's intact, and not like it takes up much space. Probably a good lesson for you and anyone who is new that is reading this, that a person should appreciate the little things. With that said, I threw out a bent silver disk - love token. It wasn't as obvious to me it was something as the buckle would have been, but live and learn.

Sorry to hear you lost your relic, but now it gives you motivation to go find another. :)

Reminds me of the old saying....one man's trash is another man's treasure : )

Most of my treasure is another man's trash. I have tried to sell several brass items that were unique and had manufacturer's names on them. I am thinking it is better to recycle them and have a few bucks than taking up space with them doing nothing. Taking pics is a good idea though!
