I love road cuts!

So I have stopped at this road cut several times but just found the peacock pyrite today. We kept finding pockets that led to more pockets. It was so much fun. It's amazing what good weather, good friends & nice rocks can do to lift ones spirits.

"road cut" is?

Dizzy a road cut is where they have exposed/ blasted a chunk of rock to be able to build the road. I like going to the new ones cuz you never know what the new cut will reveal.
Ditters this is a cut on 67 in MO. We live in the lead belt, & there are nice cabinet specimens to be found all over the area.
Eu, Ha! that is a good one!
Dig iron, I know there are some nice minerals in VA. Do some research, I'm sure you'll find something in your area to dig.

I agree Old digger! & even though I have to many pieces of it on my dining table, I still go out (weather allowing) & look for more. The deeper I get in the cut, the better & bigger the specimens are. Swinging that mallet is hard work, & my nails are shot, (those were my friends in the pics) but it seems like each piece I find is better then the last. ( Oh no!! Is it better than or better then??)

Road cuts are the *best*. All the hard work is done, the rest is just investigating!

Well, yes & no. New faces exposed, but in this case there is a lot of hammering to get to the goodies. Still if they hadn't blown the rock I wouldn't be searching it. Last week a friend & I stopped at a road cut I have driven by who knows how many times, & it was FULL of fossils! Of course we were just going to the fabric store so I didn't have my trusty dusty tools with me. duh! When weather permits I will be back there.

That's really, really cool, Mamabear! And most certainly, there are excellent road cuts in VA. Go the state geological website for locations of exposures in the past (it's a dated site), and surely there will be more. A good friend and her geologist son went south of Albemarle County and found a number of items. The ridges are as full of interesting minerals as N. Carolina- just different. Thanks for the show!
