I was driving around and decided to hit up my local goodwill store. I cursed thru the isles and nothing jumped out at me till I peeked in the jewelry case. I see 8 silver looking goblets (just like the 6 that I found last year that were stamped sterling). I asked to open the case and I seen that the goblets were marked $10 each. Well I didn't see the words sterling or NS or plate or any other combination like that but it did have a makers mark and said "silver" so I took a chance....

Well I have been meaning to get internet on my cell phone, man that would of come in handy because when I got home I looked up the company and dang if it wasn't silver plate over copper... Live and learn I guess, I just didn't want to buy one then run home to find it was in fact silver then run back and the rest would be gone - greed got the better of me and now I have 8 plated goblets. I was thinking of smashing them or use as targets on the range but I think I will keep them as a reminder that wanting something to be something isn't enough and especially when it isn't stamped with 925, 980, plat, sterling, 14k, 18k, ect. (I know not all things are stamped but that $80 could of went towards something else.

I see the same goblets selling on ebay for $8-$12 each, I could make my money back but all's I seen was $1,000+ in sterling sitting on the shelf. :laughing7:

Get what you can back out of them and consider the difference costs of education. I would try craigslist first, no shipping or ebay fees.

I've been bitten more times than I care to admit, but at least it has always been for small amounts I can ususally come close to breaking even on.

Well you've probably saved well over $80 by not having internet on your phone so look at it that way.

Ive been on the bad end of deals more then a few times. $80 is a tough bullet to bite though. Maybe save one as a pimp chalice and get whatever you can out of the rest.

By law since the stamp act everything is suppose to be marked if made of precious metal.Though some may slip by be wary of things unmarked.

that sucks man...Im usally on the othe end of that...i will see something...wont buy it...then get home, find out its something GOOD!!!!..immedaly go back and its gone....So now i just stand there like a fool googling it....I find a lot of hidden treasures in the dishes for some reason

I think I got a set of those too.... paid $20 for my set cause they looked cool!

keep in mind that if you can buy Silver plate dirt cheap AND it's Silver over Copper there is pretty good value in scrap Copper. I also know a guy who goes around to the flea markets and buys up all the dirt cheap .50 and .25 cent Brass doo dads, heavy Brass elephants, candlesticks, etc. and scraps them. He makes out pretty good.

As far as having internet on the phone...well I wouldn't ever be without it. I use it way more than the phone part. I can tell you for sure that it makes me more per month than it costs me to have it.

That's what I like about my local Goodwill store- 7 day return policy.

I guess after finding this out, you really did curse through the aisles.
