My wife's first season detecting with me and she continues to have eyes for hotspots. I research old maps and get us close, she zeros us in. We are really enjoying this together but our pattern seems to be locating where very poor or very careful people lived and worked. They dropped a ton of stuff... Everything but coins!

The pocket knife turned out to be interesting. The shield on the handle scale reads, "Star Brand Shoes". Company was founded 1898 or 99 and used that name until 1910 or 11. I'm guessing it was a promotional thing.

Looks like there was a lot of human activity there for sure.
With that many Relics in the area, odds are there are some nice old Coins hiding out.

The hunt is great, the research about your finds that leads to that feeling of having recovered something really cool is what it's all about. Apparently we found a grease fitting from a stream powered car...really??

Correction/update - don't want to be giving out bad information, the article I based the grease fitting details on had an inaccurate photo. This is a fastener used on a variety of things, car tops, side curtains, leather bags, etc. the company had military contracts in WW2. It's still old history and a sweet recovery, just not a grease fitting from a stream powered car. My apologies.

It never stops amazing me at the things I learn about the lives of the people seeking to make a go at life in these isolated areas back in the day. Turns out this little forgotten community was setup by a small coal mining company to house the miners and their families. Around 250 people total between 1900 and 1930. They were paid with "scrip booklets against wages" so probably very little actual currency or coinage but finding bits and pieces of their daily life is humbling and inspiring in a way. Gotta love this addiction to recovering the past we call a hobby.
