So I'm making my lunch rounds yesterday, stopping by a few small town banks near where I work. Got a few rolls of dimes and nickels, and of course asked if they had any halves, which they never do. This time, however, the teller said she didn't have any loose, but they had some in the vault. I asked if I could purchase them, and she asked how many I wanted, proceeding to explain that they came in $10 rolls. I nonchalantly said I could buy maybe $100 worth, and she goes back to get them.

The vault door had a glass partition, so I could see part of what she was doing. It took her a little while, placing one roll after the other on the counter in the vault, and logging it in the book there, but I'm pretty sure she didn't have time to go through them. She brings them out, I give her a hundred, and ask how many she has back there. "About $300 or so more. We don't get them very often; they've been there awhile..." Not having more money with me, and not having an account there, I figure I'll come back later if the first $100 looks promising.

Well, it did look promising. Of the 10 rolls, there were 4 different styles of wrappers. I opened the oldest looking one, and found not silver, but gold! Gold plate, to be specific - not really worth anything, but pretty cool looking. None of the rolls had silver, but the vast majority of the halves were old - 70's, 80's, & early 90's. I decide I'm going back for the rest, but can't make it back till the next day.

Today after lunch I go back and ask to buy the rest. Different teller this time, she goes into the vault and comes out with $400 in halves. They're in one of those two-level square type boxes, but again several different wrapper styles. I pay and get out. Pulling out of the parking lot (I couldn't wait!), I opened the box and pulled out a roll. It has an "x" marked on it. I pull over to the side of the road, and look closer at the box. EVERY roll has an "x" or some sort of marking on it. I open a few just to verify, and it looks like I picked up someone else's dumps.:BangHead: Upon closer review, two of the rolls don't have marks on them, but they contain nothing of value either.

What I can't for the life of me understand is what the heck happened. Did I get a random 10 rolls yesterday? Were they all unmarked, and gone through by the bank staff this morning? Or when I offered to buy $100, did the teller purposefully give me 10 unmarked rolls, either as a gesture of kindness or in an attempt to fool me into taking the rest? I am completely dumbfounded :icon_scratch: :icon_scratch: :icon_scratch:

At any rate, I've got another $500 to dump with nothing to show for it but a goofy gold plated half. Still though, you gotta keep swinging; it'll come eventually.

I wouldn't doubt it if someone in the bank went through them, it happens. A Manager from another bank seen me picking up some boxes and asked what I was doing and when I told him he smiled and said he checks the rims on all the loose change that comes through his bank. To be honest you can't really blame them, if I worked at a bank I would probably do the same. That is why the best bet is to get unopened boxes, if you get silver from the teller consider yourself lucky that the person doesn't know what they have there. Those tellers that I mentioned are also becoming pretty rare also, almost all of them know the deal with metals being so high.

Reminds me of the time that I walked into a Fifth-Third on the south side and asked for halves. They had $470 in the vault, which I promptly bought, and found that they were someone's dumps.

Happened to me last week. Just started CR hunting and asked the teller for half and she returned with $ 340. Was thrilled until I found some small peices of rolled paper in side the last 7 rolls :(. Now I know to ask for $500 boxes.

Yeah it is a chance that you get someone who works in a bank who is a coin collector as well. My friend used to do the same thing. He would get all the dumps from church collection plates. Got all kinds of good coins out of there, manager let him swap it for face value.

I will take all the dumps and still check, as I have found missed silver 40% coins or they just didn't look good enough to catch the silver. I prefer non dumped, but I take them all.
