I Think I've Found A Spencer...
Based on what I have gleaned on line, this big rim-fire casing seems to be the correct diameters at the base and mouth to be from a Spencer .56-56 repeating rifle or carbine, favored by the Union Army cavalry troops. I found it alongside of the same 1830's-1920's wagon road that just keeps producing for me, (however with much sweat and many hours of swinging...) This gem is a first of its kind for me.
Our soil here in the Ozark plateau of Southwest Missouri is compacted, decomposed limestone and quartz. I have to pick every treasure out of its rocky hiding place with a long, dull screwdriver. Every time I see you folks with your soft, dark, stone-free soil, I get dirt envy...
Thanks for looking, Sub
