The only thing I know for sure is that I DON'T know anything. The more I research, the more confused I get. I did try to scratch it with a knife but to be quite honest, I don't know if it scratched or not. I guess that would mean it probably didn't if I can't see anything.

If you aint sure, try again. Do you have any means of magnification? (10x should be plenty!)
Then check the test area under magnification.
If the knife left a metallic "line" it should be harder then the knife, if not it might be softer and a scratch should be visible.

Hope that helps!

I do have a magnifying glass. I'll use it. So if it scratches, it isn't jade but if it doesn't then it is?

If it scratches, it eliminates harder alternatives, that's what we'll try to do for starters - eliminate possibilities.
It could even be green chert for all I know. Keep in mind the chalcedony group isn't ruled out yet, either.

We're dealing with guesses when looking at a photo. Not much more. :)

Thank you! I am going to take your suggestion and get a loupe. I had no idea what that was so I googled it. Thanks again for all your help!

If getting a loupe get a triplett and preferably corrected. I think achromatic was another good thing - what ever it means. :P

Value of a same size type & raw sample of jade.. can go onwards and upwards to $100 estmated. (your sample) thou you would really need to have someone varify the sample first.. Proving it's jade would up the value.

I don't think it's jade, although I still have no idea what it is. There are small pockets of crystals inside. I got a rock tumbler and whacked off a few pieces to tumble. It is gorgeous, although it's not finished yet. I also got the Smithsonian Rock and Minerals book. Still have to get the loupe.
